I live in London and I'm trying to find out what speed is available now and in the future at my parents place in Hawke's Bay.

Is there one website I can go to that will tell me what speeds are available now and when fibre optic will be available, based on an address or phone number?

Not really.
There is the telecom wholesale avaliability checker which will tell you ADSL, ADSL2+ and VDSL

With the fibre to the home build out in urban centres, it isnt really mapped out as the different companies in each city will be creating their own maps when they get ready to build and make announcements.

If they are rural, the DSL will go a maximum of 5km from their local exchange or cabinet, and telecom cannot guarantee their ability to get broadband untill it is connected and tested as working.
All other ISP's are the same.

Are they urban or rural?

Okay,

ADSL2+ is in their area, and probably also VDSL. Its a cabnetised area with roadside ADSL2+ and VDSL2+ equipment.

All major ISP's should be able to provide service.

Unison have announced free fibre connections to the business district:

Hastings, Napier and Havelock North, Onekawa and Hastings CBD are first in line. Currently max 1Gbps but could increase up to 10G if demand is there.

"RSP Neocom quoted Hawke's Bay Today a 10Mbps connection, with no data quantity cap, at $499 per month, 30Mbps with no data cap at $725 and 50Mbps with no data cap at $899. Prices were exclusive of GST"

For home users this is the relevant part from the article:

"Unison Networks were enjoying a synergy with its fibre network. It was used both for internet connection and to monitor the performance/operation of its network - called the Smart Grid. Eventually all households would have Smart Meters on their premises to offer power-consumption options and at the same time provide fibre internet connections"

Unfortunatley, the companies that I would use the fibre network for, are no where near where they have put it up.

I thought about providing service over the fibre, but then figured, its not worth the effort because it doesnt go anywhere useful.

They basically built it to link the power stations, and a few schools along the way.

I was vaguely aware of it but it doesn't sound like my parents place will be getting fibre any time soon for instance.

When I moved to London from NZ back in 2002 the internet here in the UK was almost worse than NZ if I recall correctly. Now I'm on an uncapped 50 Mb fibre optic connection.

Are you sure its a fibre connection (it may well be) but if its the BT Infinity product (or similar wholesaled product) then its most likely VDSL2 via FTTN not FTTH. NZ like the UK has rolled out an extensive FTTN network thats capable to also deliving 50Mb/s to the majority of connections, its just in NZ no ISPs are offering that yet, they claim lack of demand, I expect that to change soon as more homes get FTTH and there will be a flury of demand to match over copper.

For some odd reason BT describe in the marketing blurb that the VDSL2 service as a Fibre service, its a Fibre to the Node service not Fibre to the Home.

As others have said FTTH is on its way to NZ also, timetables for delivery to most NZ urban homes is by 2019, in the meantime FTTN is it.

The point is it wasn't always that way, and it's not just London. Being so far from the rest of the world NZ surely has a lot to gain from a modern high speed internet infrastructure.

Are you on their true FTTH trial or just their DOCSIS3 FTTN network that they refer to as "fibre" in the same way the DSL FTTN network does? The cable network is coax to the door, but fibre fed FTTN cabinets and is the exact same technology used in Wellington, Christchurch and Kapiti by TelstraClear. It is not true fibre to the home.
