This is what happened:

  1. A few months ago, I bought by first ever .co.nz domain from discountdomains - my first ever domain of any kind!

  2. My web designer provides web hosting, but, it turned out, not emails.

  3. I bought an email package from dicountdomains.

  4. I tried to make it all go in Outlook 2007.

  5. It turned out discountdomains need me to use my gmail smtp to send emails. Is this normal? Or I can pay an additional $5 per month to send them through their server.

  6. I used the gmail smtp and it was sending and receiving emails - but although I'd chosen in Outlook to send them from my new .co.nz account, they were arriving with my gmail name. I found this out yesterday - guess I should have realised it would. I've sent heaps of emails out not looking very professional!

  7. I set up gmail with my new .co.nz account as the default sending account, but now they arrive with my gmail account as the sender, "on behalf of" my .co.nz account. It seems there's no way round this... is there??

It seems I have only expensive options - pay discountdomains another $5 per month, or gmail $50 per year, on top of what I've already paid discountdomains for their incoming mail service.

What would you suggest, please, that I do now - or next year, when my subscription to discountdomains runs out?

Thanks, JK

With a POP3 email service such as provided by Discount Domains your would normally use your ISP's SMTP server to send e-mails.

From Discount Domains FAQ:

---

How do I send my email?
You can send email using the Web Browser Interface. If you are using POP3 or IMAP to download your email to your computer, you should use your ISP's SMTP server to send email e.g. if you connect via Xtra it is send.xtra.co.nz, if you connect via Paradise it is smtp.paradise.net.nz.

---

So in your "outgoing server" settings in outlook you wolud enter the name of your ISP's SMTP server.  You do not need to use GMail's SMTP server.

It is odd that discountdomains told you to use Gmail's smtp servers... unless the domain is registered with Google Apps you can't use their smtp server without it changing the sent address to what your getting (I assume your using your @gmail.com username/password to send?). You can use Google Apps for free (Standard Edition) for up to 50 email address's with 7 gigs of space for each one (with full POP3/IMAP). If you only need a few accounts this is by far your best (cheap/free) option, you don't need to pay the $50 per year fee, the standard edition is fine for most uses (I've just set this up for a company who started using it in production environment today).

You can just move your email service to Google Apps and host your domain's email with them - this will remove the "on behalf of" when using Outlook...
