im using google chrome 5.0, i have the Japanese language pack installed ive tryed everything on this help thread:

and still it shows up as little boxes, is there anyway to stop this?

Not sure if this can help, but you might need to change the browser font settings to UTF-8.

What OS are you using?
I'm using Opensuse 11.2 with ibus/anthy for Japanese language support.

Just installed google chrome to test.
Japanese fonts show without me doing anything at all after installing Chrome.
Even get the neat wee box asking if I want to translate it.

Are you sure you have your Japanese language support installed correctly?
Do you get Japanese fonts in any other browser / program?

@hellonearthisman ive tryed that and they just show up as boxes still

@farcus im using Windows XP Professional sp3, and yes its installed correctly, and yes i they show up for me on Firefox, and IE

the only resion im using Google Chrome is cause i like the looks more ^_^

boxes showing where there should be Japanese characters is an indication it cannto find any fonts. If using XP most likely the fonts are msgothic and msminch (or something like that)
Make sure yo uhave those installed.
Also try seeing if you can specify those fonts under Japenese fonts in google chrome ui

I don't have google chrome in front of me at the moment but one other thing worth investigating is the character encoding.
Firefox has an option to "auto-detect Japanese encoding". This needs to be set for pages like Yahoo Japan as they use EUC-JP and if you use UTF8 it will not show up correctly. Most Japanese websites use iso-2022JP

If yo ucan't find an autodetect option try changing manually and see if it makes a difference

i tryed that... and still no luck, other than autodetect my Google chrome doesn't have that

i have everything i need installed, ive tryed using difrent font types, and still nothing...

but its weird how it shows up on firefox, IE, yahoo messanger, hotmail EVERYTHING but chrome... and i dont want to use FF just for japanese characters... because i cannot stand the look of it lol... its just to ugly on Xp... even when i do change the style haha... just ♥ chrome 2 much

oh - actually Yahoo JP seems to be using UTF8 now, sorry.
I take it with Japanese language support installed you can input / type Japanese?
What happens if you input something in Japanese into search in google chrome? Do you get the boxes return with the google search results or Japanese text?

if i type anything Japanese on google chrome it just shows up at boxes, but if i copy and paste those boxes to word or anther browser it changes back to the Japanese characters ...

I read in one posting by a google developer that it might be something to do with the way Chrome reads fonts on your system - which is different to how other browsers do this.

Apparently there is a bug report for this - but has been in place for a couple of years and not addressed yet.

What you could try is making iso-2022JP your default encoding and specifying default fonts as mspgothic and mspmincho for sanserif and serif. This will probably mess up viewing of English language websites though - you'll be able to view them fine but the fonts will be ugly (unless of course a font is specified in the websites encoding)

I just pointed Google chrome at yahoo.co.jp on my xp netbook and it displays fonts no worries.

Chrome 6.0.427.0
Font Time New Roman
Arial
Courier New

XP Home edition
Version 2002
Service pack 3

your using 6.0 which is the beta correct? maybe the issue was fixed in 6.0 now if i could only find a dl to test that theory

google chrome 6 for XP

you could also try downloading the Japanese stable version of chrome. May give you Japanese menus though.
Just a thought.

I'd suggest uninstalling your current install of chrome and cleaning up any leftover files (config files) also.

But did you have Japanese menus or were the menus just boxes - or did the menus remain in English?
