Does anybody know of any load balancing techniques similar to Cisco Server Load Balancing (SLB) that would run on low end routers or switches. The models available to me are Cisco Router 2611 and Cisco Switch 2950

Any help would be awesome guys
Thanks in advance :D

what are you trying to achieve?  load balancing of a couple of web servers?

Sorry i should have explained first. I have 2 PCs and each has a storage server, both servers will have the same address. What i want to achieve, is when a user connects to the server the router or switch will send it to ether of the 2 servers. this can happen in an ordered method or a random method as long as the user connects to a different server each time.

Not really feasible load balancing storage with a load balancing device, how will you replicate writes from one server to another for example?

You might as well look at DFS instead

I was think of have both PCs back up to a 3rd PC then do a reverse back up from the 3rd PC to both servers

Buy an F5 off Ebay ( they are quite cheap for a 3400 LTM). You will never look back.

what protocols are you actually attempting to load balance?

HTTP/HTTPS?
SMB/CIFS?
FTP/SFTP?

If you want to load balance you need to worry about persistence, load balancing methods and other things - dependent on protocol. Also what do you have for ensuring your storage is all replicated and up to date?

Thank you, unfortunately I am not able to buy one its part of my Uni assignment. I was really hoping i would be able to use the equipment available to me.

I am using scripts running periodically to ensure everything remains the same across the servers.

I want to ensure that if multiple users are connect to the server that the users are spread out evenly amongst the servers

So again - what protocol?

You have software options for certain protocols.

a 2950 won't do it, nor will a 2600 series router.

You are best to give each server its own IP address, and then use DNS to have 2 A records for the domain name. Its fairly cruid, and if one server goes down, 50% of your users will get timeouts.

With your networking kit, its not possible to load balance with. You need specialized kit to do that.

In windows you have NLB and also clustering, these may be easier options to use over hardware assisted solutions. Of course I recommends a little light reading before deciding on the ideal solution.

Load balancing at that tier is kinda unusual. Usually you would scale storage up, not out, because you'll need to replicate. If it was mostly read that would be different, as then server sync wouldn't be so much of an overhead, but if you're writing to both a lot then the inter-server traffic will almost negate the benefit.

How about taking a step back and telling us what you're trying to achieve.

I've got both LTMs and GTMs, and would have to agree! Even had a virtual appliance LTM too at one stage.

But load balancing storage... might be over thinking it it a little. DFS or GlusterFS sounds like the way to go for this one.

Windows Server 2012 R2 also has a feature called "Scale out file server".  You can create a two node storage array where clients will be redirected to the best node, or may even pull data from all nodes at once.  If you're interested in learning a few more features, there is a competition on Geekzone which has a learning element to it, which happens to be about the new storage features in WS2012R2 :) see http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=143681

Thanks for all the feedback

I'm doing a project at MIT and i am using Owncloud as private storage. I was thinking of having 2 instances of Owncloud on 2 different PCs but i want there data to be made available to any user regardless of the instance they connect to. I also want the client to be able to connect to ether of the instances randomly. If one instance were to fail i would like the other to take over automatically. That's why i was think if they were both active and you could connect to ether one of them and the data is the same on both instances of Owncloud it wouldn't matter if one were to fail because you should be able to be redirected to the other.
