I have an IBM Thinkpad R50p notebook with built-in Bluetooth running Windows XP SP1. I just recently bought a Motorola V710 phone and a HS-820 headset. I would like to be able to use the Headset with IP Softphone software that I have installed on my notebook, however, I can not get the notebook to discover the headset. When I go under

Control Panel -> Wireless Link -> Bluetooth Tab -> Add -> Next

I get the following error message:

Could not discover a Bluetooth device. Make sure it is turned on and that you have
followed the manufacturer's documentation.

I have made sure that the Bluetooth Radio is turned on with Fn+F5, so I know that is not the problem.

Oddly, my system does not have a Bluetooth system tray icon, nor a "My Bluetooth Places" icon like I have seen described on the Bluetooth guide for this topic.

Has anyone made this work before and have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or even just how to get the icons I am missing back?

thanks,

ted.....

Are you sure this Bluetooth software supports the Headset profile?

Also, make sure the headset is in discoverable mode. Most of them will only be capable of working with one Bluetooth device, either your mobile phone or your laptop. Currently very few headsets can be paired with more than one device - and switch calls correctly.

The Bluetooth software I am using on the notebook is Microsoft (Wireless Link CPA under XP SP1). How do you verify what Bluetooth profiles are supported on the particular version of Windows XP you are running? Any ideas?

thanks ... ted

Ok, so this is the Microsoft Bluetooth stack (the one that comes with their mouse and keyboard)? If so then it won't have the Headset profile.

Well... I didn't buy a Microsoft mouse or keyboard to get the Bluetooth software. It came with my IBM Thinkpad R50/p. Other than the "IBM Integrated Bluetooth II" driver, all of the other drivers and software that are loaded and I have indicated that I am using are Microsoft (presumably the ones that come with XP SP1). Actually, I take it back, even the IBM Bluetooth driver is signed by Microsoft. Any idea what I need to load to get support for the headset profile on Windows XP? I have read that XP SP2 has improved Bluetooth support. Will this help me or hurt me? I have seen plenty of threads with subjects like "Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth Woes..."

thanks,

ted...

Ok, if it comes with the IBM Thinkpad it may not be Microsoft. You'll have to find out what the software is this, and version. If this is a Microsoft stack, 3COM or XTNDConnect stack then no Headset profile is available. If this is Widcomm then Headset profile is available from version 1.3 and up.

The remark about the headset itself being only capable of handling one pairing at a time still remains.

I found Bluetooth Software on the IBM website for my IBM Thinkpad R50p, which I have installed. I have installed it. I noticed when it installed that it said Widcomm during the license portion of the install, so the software must be licensed from Widcomm by IBM. Anyway, I have installed it, but I am no better off than before. I now have a "My Bluetooth Places" icon on my desktop. However, when I click on the icon it will not open. Sometimes, I Eventually get a dialog box that states it could not find any Bluetooth devices. The odd thing is that when I go under "Wireless Link" under Control Panel, it can see my phone and the "Dial Up Networking" functionality works.

Somebody please help. Am I really the only one on this planet trying to get this combination of Bluetooth devicdes and software to work?

thanks,

ted...

If it helps anyone....

I finally got this problem resolved. It turned out that the problem was due to the IBM installer not installing the Widcomm 1.4.3.4 driver correctly. The install would go through and at the end it would state installation was successful. However, if you went into Device Manager and looked at the driver version that was installed for the "IBM Integrated Bluetooth II" device, the driver version was 5.something, which I'm guessing was some sort of Microsoft driver on my system. I was able to fix the problem by using advice I found on Jon's Guides that basically stated to use Device Manager's "Update Driver" facility to specifically point to the installation directory and switch to the driver in that directory. After doing so, everything is now hunky dory. I have a Blue icon with a white background with a full set of device types to configure.
