Hi,

We just had a VDSL line installed the other day as we're in zone for it. Apparently we're 800m away from the cabinets though (and the technician said best speeds are from 500m away). At the moment we're getting about 13Mbps down and 4Mbps up. We realise we're not in the best position but were wondering if there is anything we can do to improve speeds?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Just wait, you may not need to do anything - DLM (dynamic line management - part of the Chorus network providing VDSL), may not have settled on the right line profile yet.

PM me your account number and I'll keep an eye on it....

try to terminate your modem as close to the master filter as possible. then run a Cat6 LAN cable from the modem to a router in bridge mode. you MIGHT get up to 1Mbps upload

I'm around 1km from the exchange and i got 17 down 5 up when chorus installed a jack around 10m from the master filter

then i asked them to install it further, so they came back and ran a 30-40m cable (i hope it is cat 6 will check) and now only getting 16/3.6 !

someone explain the physics?!

it is a genie to make it stable though ;) I suppose it's a good thing in the grand scheme of things (less error/resend etc)

Under some circumstances, yes.

It's not going to be able to do a lot however to improve a 15Mbps connection. There are other forces at play here such as poor wiring, crosstalk, or simply distance that are the cause of these slow speeds.

VDSL2 degradation is very much like cliff effect you see in the digital world - reach a certain distance and it really just crashes.

This subject line is really contradictory, if not oxymoronic. VDSL is HIGHLY susceptible to distance, as @sbiddle said and illustrated, outside of moving house or rewiring your own(even then that might not change anything), there really isn't much you can do, with those speeds though ADSL2 might even be better for you..
If it has recently been provisioned though, you will need to wait for the DLM to assign your profile. Can bring some speed increases as others have said, it might not though.

First thing the OP needs to do is let Orcon know the connection that he is on, until we can identify it we can't look at it further. Once we have looked at the connection we can assess what is actually wrong - if anything.

So OP, please either log a ticket and PM me the number or PM me your account number and we will look into it...
