Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I've been with Orcon for nearly a year and a half, mostly on the ADSL2 unlimited plan with Genius phone, the phone bill side of things got me good a couple of times but on the broadband side there were no real issues. 10-11mbps down and just under 1 up.
There's a few things connected to Wifi here(couple of smart phones, laptop, smart TV) and on the hardwired side of things an Xbox and PC. For the most part my ADSL handled it, Netflix ran well, Youtube streamed well, download speeds were consistent with how many devices were in use etc yes there were at times buffering but it was expected.
Anyway, with "UFB deployment dates" still being developed for my area aka years away(Eastbourne, Wellington) it was awesome to see VDSL being offered by Orcon and of course I jumped on it.
Peak speed stats are:
22mpbs down 10 up - Hardwired
17mpbs down 10 up - Wifi

So now that I've been hooked up for a couple of weeks and its passed the DLM period...

1. Just how volatile/sensitive is VDSL? during a speed test with just one device connected to Wifi, it will hit 17mpbs then drop to 8 then back up to 14 then crawl to 17 again and stay, meanwhile upload will stick with 10 and stay there, my hardwired PC is similar except peak is higher and it wont drop below 10mpbs, upload is again steady and glorious.

2. When I had ADSL it handled the many devices sharing the same pool together better. With VDSL the d/l speed has the potential to plummet really far, meanwhile the upload has taken a hit but still performing well! This happens with both wired and wireless, lets just say there's more buffering happening.

So for me, VDSL is hot and cold while ADSL2+ is consistent.

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

22/9 at 24db attenuation seems well in spec for eachother, actually isnt a bad sync rate given the distance.

you are on DLM-1, error rates look alright. DLM has done its job in the training pretty well.

your line is borderline in even getting vdsl.

your post seems to indicate your issue is speedtests, over wireless, while your hardwire tests sound perfect.

i suspect your issue is actually, with the change of modem, your wireless is on a different channel, in-which there is a fair bit of wireless interference on.

wireless is best effort, given the dense nature of urban lifestyle, wireless interference and saturation is just a thing to deal with.

many free applications about to try and pick the best channel with the least interference to configure your wireless to, inSSIDer i would recommend. would aim for setting your router to run on channels 1, 6 or 11.

as for your hard-wired download speeds being a bit low, ild suspect that is network saturation on your side.

Thanks for the reply. You're certainly right with the distance, according to chorus maps I'm just in the zone for Vdsl and the chorus guy said the cabinet is "by the firestation" more than a km down the road.
As for Wireless, I took myself off auto channel immediately when I was set up and jumped on channel 1, a week or so ago someone else decided they liked 1 so I moved to 6 where I've been in the clear since. I use Wifi Analyser and inSSIDer.

I'm very impressed with my potential download speed and loving my upload. Under saturation though the drop is more pronounced than ADSL2.

Volatile? is this because your wifi speeds are all over the place?? any testing of the broadband service needs to be done hardwired to the CPE.

With a downstream attenuation of 24dB (which is what you would expect from your line length) you are getting good line speeds.
