Hi all,

A guy from Chorus ran a new connection for VDSL yesterday morning but after looking at the Fritz box, the speed is actually much slower.

Rang Snap last night and after on hold for almost an hour was told that the issue may lay with the line that Chorus installed so he created work order for Chorus to check it.

Have any experienced this? Not sure whether it has anything to do with the Fritzbox firmware. Currently using a beta 6.01 that provided by Snap

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

screen shots of the DSL and specturm tabs please.

the 6.0 firmwares arent the greatest for VDSL, but it would seem snaps devices they are sending out no longer support the 5.22/5.21 firmwares which at current state are the best, so gotta work with what we have at hand.

given your rates, i suspect the firmware wont contribute tooo much (on shorter lines the differences are far more apparent)

if you know what your downstream attenuation figures were before (on adsl), that would also help.

Unfortunately I have no idea the downstream attenuation used to be.
Just to clarify, the cabinet is about 100 meters from my home.

Assuming that your top screen shot was ADSL and the bottom VDSL, you should be able to get a much better connection. 17Mbps on ADSL is a pretty good connection!

After grabbing the screen shots that hio77 recommended, could you try unplugging the DSL cable for a minute, then plugging it back in? It's quite possible that you just got a flaky sync and that forcing a resync might clear it up.

If the resync does make a change (good or bad), it'd probably be worth posting screen shots of the new stats too as a comparison.

wow. thats bad.

what exactly did the chorus tech do? i suspect something wasnt followed through correctly.

given the 17mbit sync originally, that would line up with being reasonably close to the cabinet (driven distance and cable distance can be different.)

how a tech could leave your line like that.. i dont get.

you have a long road ahead of you to get chorus to put it right..

Looks like you posted the screen shots as I was drafting my reply...

That downstream attenuation figure (41dB) it's very, very wrong. Chorus would never connect you with that sort of attenuation, and it's way out of line with what you were getting on ADSL.

If a resync doesn't fix things, I'd be getting Chorus back out to check their work.

Unfortunately I was at work when the Chorus guy came so only my wife watched him worked. He did rang me after the job was finished and I only took his word when he said all is good.

explain what the chorus tech did, as far as you can tell?

regardless of you being there or the wife, their job is still the same, they should install a RJ45 jackpoint of which cat5 cable was ran to, from the ETP where a master filter should be installed.

im sure some sort of resemblance of that would be there, if it is not, he has not done his job. make that clear to snap (although one of your posts infers snap are already on that tail too.)

Can you confirm the modem is connect to the DSL jack? It almost looks as through the modem is connected through the filter, on the POTS side, and the signal has been severely attenuated.

Here is what he did.

So yeah, he installed a new jackpoint. How can I check whether he installed a master filter? All I can see is he got a cable from the ground outside and drill a wall to put the cable through and install the jackpoint

i always understood the filter simply only let the voice portion of the spectrum through?
