Hi,
We've had Orcon ADSL2+ for the last few months and have had generally slow speeds for a lot of that time.
We have poor call quality in Skype and high ping when playing online games almost all of the time.

I've tried to solve this issue by going through Orcon's phone support, but it hasn't helped. Often they reset the line which solves it for a few hours, but it's usually bad again the next day.

I'm starting to give up hope... Is there anything I can do?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

PM me your account number and any Orcon Support Ticket numbers you have been sent.

How are you connecting to your modem, by WiFi or ethernet cable?
What are your speeds? Please run a speed test to www.speedtest.orcon.net.nz and post the results....

I'll have the guys take a look but according to the Chorus Capability map you are in a >5mbps zone so your connection based on distance to the cabinet or exchange etc will be between 5 and 10mbps which is what you are seeing.

I see you are doing nearly 1TB this month even on this connection ;-)

I've PM'd you a couple of questions about the behaviour of your modem, we may need to swap that out just in case that is contributing to the issue.

It also looks like at times you may be uploading at max line speed, that will limit the download speed you can get at the same time due to the way data packets are moved on the line. Your connection is fine for Skype but if Skype has issues it normally means there is other traffic on the line it is competing with.

skype and pings is bound to be horrid, along with download speeds to some point if your upstream is maxing out..

I'm not sure how it's maxing out...
We're skyping and playing games. Is that enough to max it out? No one's torrenting.

would depend on load and such, im hosting a large voice only call right now, thats averaging 0.8mbit upstream. thats more than many ADSL lines total sync rate.

if your playing say a source engine with hyped rates, you could easily push about 0.2~0.3mbit there too.

if its maxing out as hard as fireengine indicates however, ild suspect you have a cloud device trying to upload, or maybe an email stuck in sending..

Worth looking at the traffic on your network... If you're doing 1TB/month and you think you're mostly gaming and skyping, then something's badly wrong. Doesn't matter how much gaming or skyping you do, you're not going to get within a figurative million miles of 1TB.

To do that sort of traffic, you have some exceptionally heavy downloaders, downloading the equivalent of several HD movies, every day of the month. Any chance there are unknown users on your link (Wireless?)

Cheers - N

if you are downloading around 1TB per month that's about 1.4GB per hour for every hour of the month

which equates to about 3mbps (386kB/s) for an entire month. so thats about 1/6 of an almost perfect adsl line every single second of the month, but as you have a lower speed line its more like 1/3-1/2 your line

(i think my maths is correct)

you must have something thats either uploading or downloading which will be causing you issues

also post up your line stats, attenuation and a speed test

You beat me to the math.
Also not even I can do 1TB per month. And I stream almost every day at 400KB/s bitrate.
So that's a serious issue and a serious amount of data being used. Grateful it's unlimited!

To further substantiate this, I'm on VDSL and I really have to be milking it to get a terabyte of data usage to show on my account so I'm talking torrenting, and seeding when I'm done with it, so like other users have said, Skype and some gaming doesn't add up with your usage.

As people are doing math around this the figures for the last billing period are 95GB upload, 773GB download. The critical issue is the 95GB of upload, not an issue for your plan or for us on the network but it does indicate the upstream is being run hard and that will impact your overall experience.

If this doesn't correspond to known usage then you should check and secure your wireless and check any attached devices for compromise by a virus or trojan.

Other than that your line looks pretty good to be honest.
