Hey guys,

I've just moved rural and I've been told my grid suggests I'm probably 1-3mb Internet speeds (or something like that). The thing is I had the Chorus technician come around and he said I'm under 4km (~3.4-3.7km max) from the main internet exchange for the town and apparently that means I get faster broadband than if I were over 4km away from it? Can someone please explain if that is likely to be the case with me or am I missing something? I'm not the most Internet savvy!

The results from the first test I ran on my Asus Modem (wireless connection from other end of house) were as follows, but quickly dropped below 1mb/s:

Download: 1.21 mb/s (the highest I got on another test was still only 1.78 mb/s, but mainly between 1.08-1.30)
Upload: 0.19 mb/s
Ping: 15ms

It was after I moved the modem into my room and plugged in an Ethernet cable that speeds dropped to almost unusable.

After getting frustrated with the Asus modem I bought a Belkin N600DB to see if that made a difference. Internet is still slow as anything. So slow that it almost can't run the speed test now, it's getting a 0.05-0.1 mb/s download speed and 15 ping, so not sure there.

I've got this information from the interface of the modem and would be great if someone could help me figure out what's going on here!!!:

ADSL
Connection Type Interleave Path
Status Show time
Down Up
Data Rate 920 kbps 377 kbps
Noise Margin 16.0 dB 13.4 dB
Output Power 13.1 dbm 12.5 dbm
Attenuation 68.7 dB 37.5 dB

Our house is a brand new build and the Chorus technician had to replace two copper pars on our street before hooking up the connection if that makes a difference/gives some sort of clue.

Much appreciated!

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

PM me your address and I'll check it on the Chorus maps. Sounds like you're simply too far.

There's a couple of clues here.

68dB downstream attenuation is crazy high - it suggests a cable length a lot more than 4km, and is very marginal for a connection at all.

The 16dB noise margin suggests an unstable connection where the noise floor is varying.

What services does this say you can get?

And here is the result:

Basically too far from the exchange - Around 3.3km (approx). In your case a master filter will help push every last drop out of your connection however you're also in a 1mbit zone with no upgrade in sight. Basically, in your location this is the best you're going to get out of your connection.

Looking at your noise margin, it is riding a bit high, this will likely reduce your sync rates, but it looks like your simply far out, and rural.

What area is this in?

Wow, that's terrible news :(

South of Warkworth, north Auckland. It's a shame because just up the hill they've got fibre optics. How do I go about getting a master filter installed?

Send a message to coffeebaron, he will be able to install one for $150. It might help a wee bit but based on this distance it will be marginal.

I'm pretty sure the electricians mentioned a few times all the new suburbs in the area have fibre optics, which would suck for us, but sort of depressing at this stage knowing how slow this is.
What are my options at this point? Is the only thing I can do to improve speed go to council and see what the process is to upgrade the lines/whatever is necessary? Is there anything we can pay for to have installed to improve the connection from our house? (Like running extra lines or something).

Vodafone RBI more than likely.

At the moment there is. I meant the new ones from now on, but you guys know more about it than me! I'm only going off what I get told lol

So there really is nothing I can have done (that isn't going to cost hundreds of thousands) to get a stronger signal?

You could speak to your neighbours just to confirm they get a similar service. 68dB attenuation seems high for 4km of line length, so there may be  fault somewhere. If there is, you should see an improvement, but it still isn't going to be great.
