Hello,

I've recently returned home from a long stint in London. Over there, I purchased an Asus RT-N66U router to use with my BT fibre (oh how I miss 85mbps speeds!). It's an awesome piece of kit and the WiFi range and speed is far superior to that I get from the Orcon White Genius.

I'm not an expert in IT by any stretch of the imagination but I do like to fiddle around and have a nice and fast network in my house. To that end, I have a few questions:

- Will my Router work with Orcon VDSL if I put my White Genius into bridge mode? I've seen others refer to the Asus DSL-N66U, but not the RT-N66U
- As the Asus does not have a phone port, how would I get my phone to work? Do I need another device to plug it into or will it continue to work from the White Genius? (I'm guessing no).
- Is someone able to provide me with baby steps as to how to put the White Genius into bridge mode and then how to configure the Asus to work?

ALTERNATIVELY ...

Should I just turn WiFi off on the Genius White and have the Asus provide the WiFi instead? If so, could you please tell me ho to configure the White Genius and the Asus to achieve this as well please?

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

the RT model is a router only and i believe it will only work with UFB (Fibre)

i would say use the Asus to provide the WIFI and the genus to provide everything else

OK, I'm happy to do that. At the end of the day it's the superior WiFi I'm after anyway. Both routers are gigabit anyway so I don't see the need to use that capability in the Asus.

Are you able me how to configure both by any chance?

I'm assuming that only using the Asus for WiFi then means my phone still works when connected to the Genius White?

You can put the NF4V (white Genius) into bridge mode and have the RT-N66U do the PPPoE, routing and wireless. I use this exact setup myself, however with a different provider.
Remove the existing PPPoE WAN service on the NF4V, then create a new bridge WAN service on the PTM interface. Be sure to enable VLAN 10 tagging. Then connect the WAN port on the N66U to a LAN port on the NF4V, and set the N66U WAN mode to PPPoE client with your Orcon username and password.

The only concern is this may or may not break the VOIP from the NF4V, depending on how Orcon have it set up. If the VOIP is getting back to Orcon through the existing PPPoE WAN service on the NF4V, this is highly likely to prevent the VOIP from working.

If you do decide to mess with the NF4V be sure to back up a copy of its settings, so you can get it working again easily.
