Hi All,

We just got a new UFB 100/20 installation done and the speeds are all over the place, but not as high as I'd expect.

Speed tests are coming out at between 8 Mbps and the highest has been 30-something Mbps. Not meaning to be greedy - we didn't expect it to be very close to 100 Mbps - but I would have thought it should be at least about 60/70; or is that wishful thinking?

Can anyone else let us know what speed they get on the naked 100/20 plan from Orcon?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Do you mean Mb/s? For a 100/20 connection, somewhere around 12MB/s would be full line speed, I doubt you would get to 30MB/s.

If that's Mb/s that you've quoted, then that's a lot lower than you would expect to a local server.

What server are you testing to, how is your device connected to the router (ethernet, WiFi etc.), and what else is using your connection at the same time?

Hiya,

Yes I mean Mbps. We signed up for the 100/20 plan as mentioned.

Orcon do state (here https://www.orcon.net.nz/ufb/blog/how_fast_is_orcon_ufb) that:

"As well as this, actual UFB speeds are pretty close to the 100Mbps and 30Mbps services that you can choose when selecting an Orcon UFB plan."

I've just actually changed the server and it has improved.

I am using speedtest.net but the server was in Dunedin... have changed it to Tauranga now where we are based and am getting about 65 Mbps on average, so a big improvement. Doh, feel a bit silly now :D Yes I am testing across wifi also.

You've just answered your own question. Test via Ethernet and I'm sure you'll see full speed.

I don't have an Ethernet Adapter for my mac but when I get one I'll re-run the test :D

If you do want to keep using WiFi and want to get more speed out of it, you should look at upgrading to AC, you should be able to max out the 5Ghz band on compatible devices.

Thanks for that. I'm not sure Orcon offer these modems though and we're trying to keep costs down. Good to know for the future though.

Easily, but you need to be closish. My AC on my rMBP sits at 434mb, my wifi speed tests equalled the installers via ethernet, and when I was on 200/20, I got that.

Interested in your wired Ethernet tests from an Auckland server?

In East Tamaki we were the first to have UFB fibre install along our road.

Had rock solid mid 90Mbps download speed tests.
Now quite a few houses have been hooked up and contend with us, that combined with Orcon increase in popularity, ownership change, the speeds struggle to get around 30-50 down.

Luckily we haven't noticed any real world difference and they can continue to get away with it. (Would be good to get all that was advertised and what you pay for).

I'm assuming you haven't actually logged a fault with Orcon to find out what's wrong - because something is assuming your tests are via Ethernet and not WiFi.

If you're testing via WiFi there is nothing wrong.

I just thought this is what happens with shared infrastructure.

And my final excuse for apathy is Netflix, Skype, iPlayer all still run in parallel without issue.

These are speed tests after all, only when the real world applications start to be affected will my concern increase.

The CIR does not work how you think it does. You have *no* CIR on the EIR component of your UFB connection (and neither does any other ISP). The CIR only applies to tagged traffic with the correct 802.1p tag. The "headline" 100Mbps/20Mbps speed is only an EIR.
