I've been getting packet loss to some Australian based video game servers lately that starts in the afternoon and seems to get progressively worse towards until sometime past midnight.

The same issue seems to be occurring with two separate households with Slingshot and another household with Orcon.

I've attached a trace route using WinMTR during a particularly bad portion of the evening.

Been getting frequently kicked while playing BFV on Slingshot this week - "You have lost connection to the EA servers".

Perhaps related to this issue.

Got disconnected from otter.ai during transcription.

Using the PRGT tool (which seems very caj about security I must say) which shows speeds dipping as low as 3mb on a supposedly gb connection, and latency spikes as long as 6k+ ms.

Not good, right?

Wrote to Slingshot but got shown their own speed test results which were, of course, outstanding. Is there anyone from Slingshot on here that I can send reports to and get action rather than low-value speed test responses?

Example results from wired connection:

Done a speedtest using Ethernet too, virtually same statistics. Usually ping is around 10/11 ms.

Hmmm ... net winked out about an hour ago.

Turned computers off, disconnected cables, turned off fibre box and modem, left for five minutes, turned back on, still no net. Was having a look at the modem interface and noticed that it had apparently been on continuously for 49,510 days i.e. since just after midnight on the 1st of January 1970 - even tho net time synchronisation was on. So borrowed an earring, stuck the pointy ear bit into the reset button and voila - still set to 1970.

But the net came back on!

Also noticing that the Slingshot copyright notice on the modem gui is 2017 ... no firmware updates since then?

More weirdness - Bitdefender blocks the page as insecure because of certification verified by ... Bitdefender? But not "recognized" by Mozilla.

Earlier, when the net was off, I tried pinging google.co.nz, which returned the error "Unknow [sic] host"

The modem was also set to ADSL?

So basically Slingshot is supplying modems from the ADSL era for a fibre connection.

I'm currently transferring my connection to Spark in an extreme attempt to resolve my issue. I'll let you lot know how it goes once it's done.

what are you going to do if it doesnt work and it turns out to be a far end issue?

lots of bushfires and other things going on in Australia at the moment that have potential to interrupt the internet

It is a far end issue with the Vocus gateway, that's why I believe swapping to a non Vocus ISP will fix it.

My connection isn't until 16/01. I'll be able to verify fairly quickly if it resolves my issue so I will likely post again that evening.

Switching ISP to Spark has solved my issue, although any non-Vocus ISP would have produced similar results. I've also realised that issues I chalked up to general line instability were actually caused by this all along.

It's worth noting that Spark's VDSL connection seems to have added a flat 10ms to my latency, so if fibre isn't an option for you you may wish to consider a different ISP.

If anyone is experiencing packet loss or general net stability issues when playing on Australian based servers I would suggest you run a traceroute on the server to see if it's passing through Australian Vocus gateways that are suffering from major congestion.
