Hi,

I've been a snap/ 2Degrees customer for years and never had an issue until the last month. I've been noticing that latency has been increasing from what I'd normally expect of ~45 to ~150 to certain Australian game servers. The increase seems to always be at the ip4.gtt.net hop. What's interesting is if I tether my phone (spark) I do not see the same latency increase at that hop. This issue seems to come and go.

I'll include two trace routes below, the first from this morning showing me experiencing the issue. The second, when things are behaving normally. Friends / family in very close physical proximity but with another provider do not seem to be experiencing the issue either so I'm guessing this is something to do with 2degrees routing?

I was hoping this could be looked at and see if it's possible to resolve.

2degrees fiber in Wellington, PC on ethernet. Some devices reply slowly to ping, it doesn't matter if an intermediate hop has a higher ping it only really matters on the target server. Even on the target server ping will be lower priority than servicing workloads.

2D Fibre here, top of the south island, pings solid between 40 & 42ms. tracert also shows 40ms but a lot less hops than you are seeing, but as mentioned it's not a reliable way to test. Is the issue still occurring for you right now?

Thanks for the response, this latency increase is also seen and felt in game.

I'm still seeing the higher latency from my home fibre connection right now, also on ethernet.

As a point of comparison, google au server returns with a normal latency.

So this appears to be just you. Log a fault to 2degrees via their official channels if it is an issue. Also ensure you have rebooted everything on your end.

Ok, thanks all. I'll proceed to log a fault. Thanks for the quick responses. Everything has been rebooted multiple times at my end.

Update on this. I called 2degrees to ask for a static IP to be applied to verify whether this was a cg-nat issue. The first call took over an hour, I had to reset my fritzbox despite being able to reliably reproduce this issue on 3 separate devices. A static IP was finally attempted to be applied. I lost all ipv4 connectivity and only ipv6 was functional. It took the 2degrees team another 20minutes to remove the static ip and restore my internet access.

After this, every ~30mins i would lose connectivity to ipv4 addresses for 5 to 8 seconds, ipv6 addresses would continue to function.

I then called up again and was asked to repeat the process of rebooting and resetting the fritzbox, after begging and being on the phone for 40mins a static IP was finally correctly applied and, what do you know, it resolved the issue. Progress! Normal pathing and latency resumed - and I haven't had a disconnect since. I was then instructed that if I wanted to keep the static IP it was going to cost me $10 a month. So, I have a workaround, apparently someone is going to look into the issue but it's frustrating that I'm being charged for the static IP to work around a fault at the 2degrees side.

If anyone from 2degrees could reach out with some information about if we can either resolve the fault or leave the static IP at no charge that'd be appreciate. I have no need for a static IP and have been happy with cg-nat until this fault occurred. All I want is my stable internet back, without disconnects or weird routing.

I do appreciate the time of the 2degrees staff who assisted me with this and understand their hands are tied around the cost but this doesn't make it any less frustrating. I'm happy to troubleshoot this further if required.

Thanks.

I tried from a CG-NAT connection and still couldn’t reproduce the issue so perhaps if you switched back it may be better again. Seems very strange though.

Regarding the Static IP, I don’t think you should be charged for it. See where their investigation goes.
