My current set up is a Fritz 7490 supplied by 2degrees connected to a Huawei ONT (LAN1), and I have a Fritz proprietary mesh set up with another 7490 and a 7530. This has been working for 5+ years.

I am thinking about upgrading to a Wi-Fi 6 setup since I occasionally experience drop-out from the 5 GHz SSID. If I buy a 7590AX or 7530AX, would it be a drop-in replacement for the main 7490 that's connected to the ONT? If not, how can I configure it to work with the Huawei ONT?

Hey mate,

I've used this exact setup before. Huawei ONT -> 7590 meshed with 7490 😄

If you are replacing the main Fritz that is connecting to your ONT, you'll need to reconfigure the device and also reconfigure your mesh setup since you're replacing the master.
2degrees is a provider listed on the Fritz's drop down menu on their configuration page (via the GUI, Internet -> Account Information). You should be able to use this to bring your internet back to life on the new Fritz. Then, as I mentioned, you will need to reconfigure your mesh environment.
I would strongly suggest that if you're not overly confident with remembering configuration, take a couple of screen shots of your setup in the Fritz's GUI (Internet / WLAN / Mesh) before you get started and if you get stuck, you'll have something to quickly refer to and avoid frustration.

Another thing to note is that 2d don't supply 7590's (anymore).

Cheers

Thank you for the replies. I was planning to use the backup and restore function built into FritzBoxes, coupled with screenshots of key configuration pages. It is good to know that 2degrees is officially recognized as a provider. Reconfiguring the mesh is no problem for me.

Out of curiosity, what does 2degrees supply now instead of FritzBoxes?

I went from a 2x 7490 setup to a 1x 7590 (non AX) setup - the wifi coverage (esp 5Ghz) with the 7590 is so much better than the 7490.  Depending on the location of your primary router, you might be able to do the same.

Mine use to do the same when the Radio channel was set to auto, since fixing it to a channel with the least interference I cant recall seeing any dropouts.

The 7490's while dated are still good enough TBH, I have a 7590AX as my main router but am using 2 X 7490's as mesh repeaters on opposite sides of the house. its a pretty solid setup

They supply Netgear Orbi routers that support mesh, and I think you might be able to buy the mesh units in their physical stores. For some strange reason they are not available in their online store.

But no need to buy it from them.

I will give that a try first. Thanks!

I've used Mikrotik routers for a while with great results.

You can set up a mesh WiFi with them. Their gear is economical compared with other big name enterprise gear and has a ton of features.
