Hello GeekZone family,

We are looking at expanding and we have been running a little poll on LowEndTalk.com on our next location and NZ is one of them for shared hosting. I wanted to gauge the market locally.

Are you interested in shared hosting locally?

There are already some strong players in the shared hosting market in NZ with loyal customers, including a few members here on Geekzone, so it may depend on what your target market is.

That being said, if you need dedicated servers in NZ, let me know ;-)

I've just swapped to a new host so not on look out at the moment, but I'm fine with shared hosting but the primary limitation in NZ, is storage with the plans available.

Years ago I started out with 20MB of space...... once you add a few photos that vanishes.

If you get 2GB of storage, you tend to find all other services around it falls apart (Im just being open about a host) and causes massive slowdown on accessing your own site.

Yet I could go to someone like Dreamhost and for around $10 a month, get unlimited everything, but longer load waits, but NZ's mentality is "no, you can pay for EVERYTHING" - storage is cheap now, why are Kiwis still paying incredible amounts for it ?

If someone could offer local shared hosting with decent resources, and the right price, then I think you'll find there will be a market.

To be honest shared hosting when done right is "fine" but maybe the hobbyist me would rather have proper VPS with cheap storage.

If someone offered me linode pricing and specs but was in Auckland I'd immediately switch. But this probably isn't financially viable.

I'd prefer VPS overall, but cost for anything remotely decent in/near NZ is out of scope.....

It all depends on what you classify as decent. I'm using a VPS in Australia now, it's fairly inexpensive. Hit me up for deets. :)

I'd like a local VPS in NZ. Currently using Australian providers which are fine. Only issue is that I find NZ-based providers are quite expensive so I'd only switch if the prices were on par with those on offer in Australia.

I'm surprised people still use shared hosting when you get spin up an AWS Lightsail server for $3.50/month and have full control.
