I'm finally upgrading to a smartphone after years of $100 phones. My current phone is falling apart less than a year after buying it so I've decided to return it and use the money to buy an Android smart phone, the HTC Legend to be precise. Is it too late in the phones life span to be buying one though? This is the particular phone I'm looking at. I'm honestly not that concerned about being on the bleeding edge technologically. All I really want my phone for is texting, the occasional phone call, Facebook and Skype, some games (I have Canabalt and a few others from the Humble Android Bundle 2) and as a replacement music and podcast player for my iPod Touch. I have no intention of using it to watch video.

My concern however is that it is a two year old phone and is even now no longer receiving Android OS updates. I'm fine with this however if it doesn't interfere with the features that are important to me that I listed above. Thanks in advance for any replies!

Also, if anyone could suggest cheaper and potentially smaller android phones which do well at the things I mentioned that would be great.

Honestly having had many androids over the last few years you want to look at three things Probably in this order;

1. Minimum 800mhz processor (legend has 600)
2. Internal storage, at least 1GB alot of the apps are moveable to the SD but some of the best are not (ie google apps)
3. Find the newest version of android you budget can manage, massive difference between 2.1 (on the legend) and 4.x both in preformance and usability.

Are you planning on buying it new? PriceSpy says its $400 and you could get a better spec'd phone for half that.

It's a refurbished one for $340. Honestly, my knowledge of phones is terrible so I'll happily take any advice :)

The moto atrix 2 has a confirmed 4.0.4 update and is roughly the same specs as a SGSII and can be had for ~$400

Yeah, it looks like a good phone, but my budget is max $350. Is that going to be a limiting factor? Being a poor uni student, I could probably up my budget if I was willing to wait a few months.

Downsides 3mp cam, known app to sd issue.

Look at the Huawei Ascend G300, it can often be had for as little as $250 and seems pretty similar (but probably better) to the Telecom R22 but will work on 2degrees. The R22 is unlikely to work on 2degrees

The Legend is ancient, it's before my mobile interest time period

2degrees have the Huawei Ascend Y100 today for $99 as part of their 2degree's day deals, at that price you can't really go wrong

We now have two Huawei Ascend G300 phones in the household. Both bought for $239 from Warehouse Stationery during two separate sales. Really great bang for buck and being Vodafone branded will work fine on 2Degrees.

I have considered the Ascend (which I see you can currently get from Warehouse Stationery for $250), the only issue I have with it is that it won't run Android 4. I'm not sure if this is a major issue though. Is it?

There is a 4.0 update for the Ascend G300 in the pipeline.Should be available fairly shortly.

It's excellent value for money and what I've been recommending to people looking for an entry level smartphone. Can't really go wrong with it at it's current price.
