I hadn't backed up for a while so I feel a loss here. About 400 photos just gone from my photos on my samsung. I checked in folders and not there. I never deleted them. All photos from about February 2017 onwards and random ones prior. Some are of my Dad's 90th and my nephews wedding. Drats. For some reason my phone hasnt backed up since July 2016, says it failed and when i go to back up it says failed as an unknown error has occurred. My memory was pretty full too before these photos went missing. Google says i need to download an app to recover. Is that the solution? Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at photos.google.com? or is this what your considering as your Backup.

Did the micro SD card die? Maybe the photos were saving to that and not the phone memory

When I said i googled, I meant for an answer. I backed up to my PC manually prior.

Android has an option that will upload photos to your google account which you can find by going to photos.google.com I have had many people who do not know this is turned on and it has saved them before.

Have you checked both your internal storage as well as external SD? Sometimes photos can get stored in both locations depending on your camera settings. Also, I'd recommend using a third-party gallery like Piktures or using a file manager like Solid Explorer so that you have more control/visibility over which folder you're looking at. The stock Gallery app is a bit too simple and may not tell you were the photos are exactly stored. Finally, if you've determined that the photos are not there on the phone and SD card, I'd recommend plugging the SD card to your PC (via a card reader if your PC doesn't have an SD slot) and run PhotoRec to recover the photos. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Dropbox can automatically copy photos to your PC as well. Just tell it to do this when it hooks up to your wifi. Magic.

Hope you can find the missing 400.

I have a Synology NAS at home and use the DSPhoto app to automagically back up all my photos and video from my phone to my (mirrored RAID) NAS. My NAS is then backed up to another external drive. No annual charges from Google...and I can add storage as I need it. But Google would probably be cheaper. :-)

Hi I am not andriod savvy. I have looked at my files and all my photos are under a folder called DCIM. The DCIM for SD Card has the photos I do have. The phone memory DCIM folder has none where before it did have I think. I dont know where else to look. I have gone and looked in my document files and nothing there. ot sure where else to look. I connected to my PC and copied over the photos I do have. The computer asks authomatically so I say yes, but the missing ones aren't there unfortunately. I will try plugging in the SD card directly and see what I can see there. Thanks

Yes, the DCIM folder is where they are stored.

Now you have copied the remaining files, 'Recuva', or something similar, would be worth a go to see if it can find deleted files.

Sounds like it did some kind of factory reset due to getting corrupted or something?

Have a look in Google Photos. It has a feature where it'll upload photos over to Google and remove off your device to save space.
