I really need a new phone as my Nokia 7.2 is dying.

I really want the pixel 7a

As I live ruraly I only get 4g (spark) so volte is a must. It seems in other threads users have got pixel 6, 6a and 7 with volte.

Anyone?

Just my 2c... While I don't have any experience with the later Pixel line it should however got volte.

Now, the other part to this is you should consider a mobile sold by Spark - the reason being is you've got things such as WiFi Calling available on Spark that won't necessary be supported on the Pixel. Especially moreso when you're rural. Samsung phones have 5 years of software support these days and are not that bad (however Apple still takes the crown for software support).

Thanks for the answer.
However My current phone is from spark. It's the worst phone with the worst updates I've ever had. Spark promised it had volte but neglected to say they didn't support the phone on volte. They still don't support it but a Google update after two years of ownership
made it work regardless.

Spark still sell several phones that they don't support on volte although the phones obviously have volte capability.

I put more trust in word on the ground from people here than spark.

Also my question is specifically about the pixel. I have had samsung and apple phones and didn't like them as much as google phones or other pure android phones.

I've just swapped from my Nokia 7.2 to a Nokia G60 5G as it was on offer at Amazon.com.au . So far no issues with VoLTE on Skinny, but I haven't confirmed 5G as there is no coverage at home. Main reason for the swap is the lack of Security or OS updates for the 7.2

I also suggest considering something sold by Spark as then you can be sure you have a supported phone that is compatible with the network. Pixel phones are not fully compatible with NZ networks, there's a big thread on them on Geekzone, but it takes work to get them working properly. I really like the Pixel phones, my Pixel 4a is great, but unless Google come out with much better support for NZ networks with the Pixel 8 I'm resigned to moving to Samsung.

The Samsung A54 from Spark for example has VoLTE and VoWifi. Voice over Wifi could be super helpful if you have decent WiFi at home.

Last time I looked Spark did not support sms over wifi. If it's a priority you'll be looking at another carrier.

I'm not concerned at all with VoWiFi or 5g.

It's just VoLte I need hence the question...which is generally supported by spark/One/ 2 Deg but not officially supported on many phones besides Samsung and apple.

I have Volte currently working on my unsupported nokia (brought from spark) buying a phone from spark does not necessarily mean it will work on volte

I'm not interested in any other phones hence this question is specifically about the Pixel 7a

After posting on Friday I got in touch with gajan who did some checking. He reported that Skinny had automatically provisioned VoLTE around 3:30pm the same afternoon - weird coincidence! I checked IMS settings by dialling *#*#4636#*#*, but no change to IMS status (not registered). I went to flight mode, back onto the network and VoLTE was now showing as provisioned in the IMS Settings. I have confirmed by phoning another number that it no longer drops off 4G during the call.

I'd say you're good to go with a Pixel 7a on Spark.

In that 4636 screen how do you tell if you have VoLTE? On my 4a it says "voice network type LTE".

On your screen above, go to the three dots menu on top right, click IMS service status and this is what I now have:

PS. My wife has my old Pixel 4a - no VoLTE for it though sadly... Maybe in time?

Same here. I doubt it, and with poor pixel support in NZ looks like I'll have an S23 next time there's a good sale. I'd love a pixel 8 (pixelate!) but I think volte, vowifi, etc, is important and either not available or too difficult to get going.

It appears all the new pixels have VoLTE OOTB and maybe VoWiFi soon. Some even report 5g if that's important to you without any special procedure. Especially if your on spark or One.

That's probably worth waiting for 😀 The pixels are cheaper and better than the Samsung phones IMHO, they don't have the raw CPU performance but they're more than fast enough for everyday use.

It's a shame no-one does hardware fingerprint sensors these days, for some reason my fingers don't work well with in-screen readers. Hopefully with smart lock / face unlock / etc I could manage.
