Sorry to hear that mate. Unlikely it would go on public sale, more likely to a friend or "associate" of the thieves, pub style.
If they kept it [and who wouldn't] they could get busted for something else and the police may run the serial number on the suspicion that it is stolen. Unlikely but it could happen.

I wonder if there are any free "locate my phone" apps out there. I read recently where someone was able to trace his own stolen phone to a house using the GPS signal.

Can't find the story now, was only in the last few months.

Insurance? I double checked last week that my contents insurance covered my phone if it went missing or got broken while I was out and about.

Really sorry to hear that :/
I wouldn't know what id do if my wildfire got stolen. like the guy above me said, did you have any gps tracker apps installed? I myself use instamapper gps tracker which has the ability to be turned on via a sms message then you're able to track the phone through Google maps.

unfortunatly, i didnt have any tracker apps. they turned the phone off pretty quickly so im not sure if that would have even worked. its lucky i didnt catch them (i was upstairs) otherwise the cops would have truly had something to do! nevermind.
insurance agreeed to pay a value so i bought a new phone on the weekend, although due to the nature of getting HTC i went with a iphone... pretty different to the desire, apples and oranges but it seems equally good.

Report it to your network provider as a stolen phone. They can report it as stolen so nobody can connect it to a NZ network or disable it so it'll never ever work again.

won't return it but will make it useless for whoever nicked it.

Cheers

As there are 3 networks in NZ then someone will be able to use on Telecom or 2D if only blocked on Vodafone. You will have to contact the other 2 providers and get it blocked via them as well.

The only thing is will other other 2 providers actually block it as well?

Paul.. Will Vodafone Block a cell phone if it was not on their network if given a police report and an IMIE?

Maybe the other 2 Cell Network Providers will answer this as well?

Thanks

Not really a downgrade, its safer as who would want to pinch an iphone?

But seriously, I use Sim Checker Pro which texts and emails the number of any SIM other than the one it was set up with to numbers and an email address of your choice, that should make locating it via network provider/cops a bit easier.

I was wondering from Paul's reply how you could block it without the EMIE being supplied to other carriers as all you would have to do is put in a new SIM on another carrier..

This is a good reason for recording serial numbers. Police up and down the country execute lots of search warrants every week on thieves, burglars and drug dealers.

Property like iPhones and iPod Touches are regularly found in multiple units but can't be resolved back to specific offences because the original owners haven't recorded serial numbers.

End result: property which is known to be stolen stays where it is, burglaries remain unresolved and no one faces any punishment...

EDIT: Also quite interested in the answer to LennonNZ and old3eyes questions!

We do it already with our MVNOs and we've got an agreement in place with Telecom. Hopefully we'll have an industry-wide listing process in the not too distant future.

As it is at the moment you can contact each network provider directly to get the phone blacklisted, but soon it'll all be much easier.

cheers

Paul

Whilst not much consolation now, WaveSecure is a good phone tracking/disabling program. If you _know_ it's been stolen, then you can activate the "scream" mode, where the phone locks itself and plays a loud screaming noise repeatedly, and the only way to stop it is to wipe the device (requires knowledge of how to boot into a recovery mode and restore a firmware), or to enter your PIN number. If someone changes the SIM then the first thing the app does is text\email the new SIM number to you at an alternative location.

It's commercial, but it's pretty cheap. You can also enable the GPS to see where your phone actually is, no use if it's inside obviously.

"Seems"  - Hold that thought.

Over time you'll become aware of all the stuff you can't do on an iPhone that you could do on any Android phone.

Swap in a fresh battery for starters. Copy a file to / from your PC over wifi without having to use iTunes as a follow-up example....or run a wifi-detecting app like Wifi Analyzer....and go from there.

The thief didn't just steal your phone...He's - in effect - stolen your data freedom, too. :-)

yes ive noticed my data freedom is inhibited, i wanted to place a few "friends" as favourites or something on a home screen so i could call them quick.. not gonna happen!
and so far facetime is awkward with males.. bring on a website with attractive women with iphone 4's that wish to experiment with facetime....
