Should parallel imports be banned? Should TTPA be approved based on corporate interests?

Indeed.

Last year, I purchased a turntable from Amazon. The model I wanted was selling here with a RRP of $750, and the cheapest price by a local retailer was $699. Including shipping charges of $150, it cost me $450 all up to import it from the US. I got lucky and avoided the GST & duty surcharge, but even if it was applied I was saving money.

Should this have been illegal too?

Only from the point of view that because the cost of the import was over $NZ400 you should have paid GST. Could be considered tax avoidance?

If the declared amount was correct and NZ Customs didn't charge GST then there's no tax avoidance.

Which was the case here.

I can't read the article because I'm not a subscriber, but according to the NBR apparently TVNZ is also banning the Slingshot ad

Herald Article

TVNZ pulls Slingshot ads off air

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11304231

I agree with TVNZ, under the principle that they are not required to advertise a competitors product.

Very disappointing that a journalist wouldn't immediately ask Sky rep "What NZ law are NZ consumers breaking by doing this?"

I have read the article above about TVNZ banning Sligshot and another intersting comment...

"Sky TV is also launching a Netflix-style service before the end of the year"

This sounds like a loosely veiled Sky catch up serice.......but this will only work if..

Content!!  It MUST have content - a broad range of past TV series and current content that you can download to your sky box and watch at your leisure......

An EPG update....to searching for shows and making the planner easier to use....

Content.....HD>>>>HD>>>>>HD - it must increase its HD content - start making some key channels HD - the content Sky TV buys in is in HD so why cant Sky NZ update their crappy infrastructure to make HD content pretty much standard....!   Its 2014 FFS!  NZ has a global reputation for being back in the dark ages...and Sky NZ opitamise that!

Price.....the new catch up service has to be thrown in as part of the monthly subs....if not - you will really get peoples back up!

I don't want no sugar in it - thank you very much

The Slingshot press release:

TVNZ has joined SKY TV in banning Slingshot’s latest TV ads, which briefly feature the ISP’s Global Mode service.

Global Mode allows Kiwis to access Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming video services, and choose to pay for content rather than to pirate shows, which many Kiwis are resorting to today.

Slingshot GM Taryn Hamilton says TVNZ informed the ISP today that it wouldn’t run the ads.

“This is anti-competitive, undue censorship, and an example of old-school thinking,” he says.

“SKY and TVNZ need to wake up and smell the internet. People are accessing content from around the globe – Global Mode or not.

“Having a company like Sky try to stop the message that Kiwis don’t have to tolerate such poor and expensive content options is one thing. But a state owned broadcaster doing the same is absolutely outrageous.

“We don’t think the NZ public will tolerate this. We are calling on the Broadcasting Minister to interject and direct the TVNZ board and management to pull their heads in.

“The management of TVNZ and Sky would be better served pushing back on their suppliers and demanding that they can have a better, more affordable catalogue of content so that Kiwis don’t continue to get a raw deal.”

I have seen this article and one person mentioned about Sky's potentially harmful "Streisand Effect". Which is true in a sense that Sky has been a dictatorship of broadcasting rights and that they are losing a lot of customers.

TVNZ on the other hand, is state operated. But by saying that they do not support this kind of move, it's just now putting a lot of pressure on the issue of broadcasting rights in NZ. If we want to keep piracy down, at least offer us cheap, reliable and full access to services, instead of advertising "full" access to your favourite channels from a rip-off price per month or so and then just airing the same show repeatedly. Our relative and a friend of ours have cancelled their Sky subscription because of this and they could not keep up with the payments. Now I believe that Sky is currently in desperation of trying to keep up with their business. But all they have to do to make it even worse is to keep using their same old business model till their demise.

So for now, if we ever want to keep up with our favourite shows, it's down to VPNs or Global Mode.

Thanks for the quote. An interesting, but inaccurate, take on the situation from them. (Disclaimer: IANAL)

I have no issue with that. What I have issue with is Sky trying to paint users circumventing geoblocks to legally pay for and stream content, as performing illegal activities. They are trying to get the general public to equate doing this with piracy, which is the same verbiage that Foxtel and other providers in Australia have tried to sneak into conversations around their outdated business models.

And don't discount its effect either. I had to reassure my wife last night that we're not actually breaking any laws doing what we do.

From the Herald article:

"It's simple really. It doesn't make any business sense to promote a competitor's service that encourages viewers to watch international programmes that we hold the exclusive rights to in NZ," the TVNZ spokesperson said."

That's a much more logical response from TVNZ that Sky's false accusation of piracy. TVNZ and Sky are both within their rights of not run the ad, Sky's problem is that it's using false pretences for their reasoning which many people are seeing for what it is and it's coming back to bite them. In any case, by rejecting the ad, they have (both) unwittingly brought attention to the fact that their business models are outdated and not in the best interests of consumers.

Oh, and a footnote from this article, if they want to take matters into this a bit more:

Concerned Kiwis can email Broadcasting Minister Craig Foss at c.foss@ministers.govt.nz

I agree, Sky is doing exactly as you say - unfortunately what Sky is doing is working, a couple people have asked me if it was illegal.

TVNZ and Sky have different agendas.
