I'm just clearing out my filing cabinet and I've come across Sky invoices for installation jobs dating back to 2003. The most recent ones are for when MySky and HDi were installed. Should I hold on to these or can I shred them?

IRD wants you to keep invoices for at least 7 years if you used them in a tax return. I've been told 10 years is safer as it is more than the minimum required and would help (assuming you have clean/honest tax returns). You can take IRD as the worst case, all others it is fine to shred after a couple of years because within 12 months companies already filed their tax returns and are unlikely to come back to you, too much work for a few dollars.

Or if you are not a "collector" like me, in theory when you receive a new invoice and the balance is correct then you can shred the previous invoice because the company will have a paper trail of all invoices for their tax filing.
