I really don't need to say more than the subject, but please, your mobile phone is an important part of your life, may even be your latest fashion accessory!

If your phone starts doing wacky things it has probably been wet.  If you come into the shop where I work and demand a new one or that I repair the old one I will tell you that if it is wet it will be returned unrepaired and you will be charged for the piece of paper telling you what I just told you for free.  How to tell if your phone has had any liquid in it at all?  (Even 'pocket sweat'.)

First, is it dripping?  That's fairly obvious.  Take the battery off, put it in the hot water cupboard and hope for the best.  And don't bother bringing it in for repair.

Are the little connectors at the base all corroded?  That's a sure sign.  Did you take off the back housing and battery and check if there is a nasty pink (or red) sticker in it?  If you have a sticker under the battery and it is white then it hasn't got water on the sticker, at least.

If it's red or pink, consider that you have just saved yourself a minimum service fee!  (And don't bring it in to me!)  Why am I so het up about it?  Because I don't like being abused when I have to charge you for sending a wet phone away.  Oh, yes, and you are given a warranty card when you buy your new phone, and it clearly states that physical and liquid damage void your warranty.

And warranty only applies to the original owner.  (Which means you are covered if it was bought as a gift for you!)

Think of it as one of those 'FYI' informers... rather useful to know before you send your phone to your local dealer.

Luckily I'm not in the nature of swimming with my phone :-P.  I would love to see someone take a TV into the electronics store asking for a refund, after it went through the wash though.

Well that would never happen macuser.

How about someone lives in a very damp home, how are they supposed to know that their TV is nolonger working due to moisture?

mobygeek, I know how you feel, I would say we would only get 1 in 20 people actually paying for their "service fee", that is why a lot of Telecom stores will not repair someones phone without taking a refundable deposit first.

Whilst in the role of acting manager for a retail phone store, I had a staff member ask me to come and deal with an irate customer:
(I worked in Corp/ME Account Management, and refused to accept the managers position because retail sucks, and customers suck[ed])

Customer bought phone in, says "its not working, I demand a new one under warranty/CGA etc blah rant rave loud swear"
Rep establishes phone bought at Noel Leeming "You didnt buy it from us, you bought from NL"
Customer demands we send it away for warranty service.
Rep explains no problem, but charges incurred if wet/dropped etc.
Rep opens phone to get ESN, water pours out.
Customer says water wasnt there when he walked into shop with phone.
It exploded into a really bad situation with lots of abuse from the customer, who clearly thought that being a big f-wit meant we would cave and do something for him.

I ended up telling him he had to leave the store due to abuse of our staff, and was never welcome back.

Why industrial size? It would fit in a standard one if you folded it first

It really annoys me when you have a genuine fault with your phone, and yet after the 3rd time it has been repaired for the same problem, they refuse to accept that you are aloud to get a refund.  That they would continue to send it away everytime it broke, and that if I was to get a refund, they would be "out of pocket".   Not only do they try make you feel guilty for trying to see your local business take a loss, but they dissallow you rights you have as a consumer.  Do they not understand that if you are to sell a product, there is risk involved, and as a business they have the responsibility to meet the requirements of law.  I don't care if a business is out of pocket because the goods they sold me were faulty, and that they are in capable of giving me a handset that worked. I had to use a loan phone for weeks, and everytime I lost my contacts because of the fault the phone had.  They would obviously rather see their customer "out of pocket" than themselves, appauling.

This of course is Leading Edge Telecommunications.

Great story... Some people believe "the customer is always right" when in fact some can be really wrong - very wrong...

macuser, they do not have to give you a refund, they should have maybe replaced it for you, but the retailer does have to right to repair the unit if they feel that that will fix the problem.

Indeed.  The better motto in that regard is 'the customer is always the customer'.  Treat them so.  However if you're dealing with an a-hole or someone who is clearly wrong, make it known and deal with it in the best way to get the best solution possible with this in mind Laughing

Speaking of swimming phones, I was told a story by a particular person I know, who is quite high up in one of the big telecommunications companies about how his phone went for a trip to the bottom of his swimming pool.  He fished it out, took it apart, stuck it in the hot water cupboard, and once it had dried out, it carried on working for months afterwards Cool

Usually when dropped in water the battery shorts out and needs a recharge as it can be deceiveing - was working now is dead... My last phone was a sony K800, was a good little phone, swam in my spa pool for 30mins (H20 + Cl + beer) which wasn't it's first dip either. Phone still works today after a year and a bit. Found that the best way to reolve it is, gasp, take it apart and stick it in the fridge - the water condenses into droplets that can be easily wiped off!!!

I am enjoying this!  We used to tell people to freeze their old ni-cad batteries...  A friend of ours had a phone down the loo thanks to a naughty toddler who was angry with mummy!  That was in Australia.  Oddly enough NZers are better at drowning their phones and then paying for new ones.  This friend's husband was very angry when the phone started working again six months later.  Moral of the story?  Get rid of the 'evidence'!  And about repairs, it's really annoying when a customer brings his /her phone back in for a second repair (same problem as before) and repair centre says it's liquid damaged!!!  Why does it come back the first time repaired/no fault found?

I have fixed a few phones. What I do is take out the battery & sim and hen run clean water through the phone for about 10 minutes. Then sun + hot water cupboard. Used the oven once... Hasn't failed yet. With the batteries I dry them then clean the connections.
