I've been wondering about this for a long time now... I know it's 20c to send a PXT but i also know that PXT uses GPRS traffic too, so do I also get charged for GPRS traffic when i'm sending PXT? If so, isn't it misleading to say PXT is 20c where there's hidden cost as to that you still have to pay for the GPRS traffic?

I'm not sure, can someone clear this doubt for me??

It uses a different gateway (on Vodafone it's pxt.vodafone.net.nz)... Thus the billing system is able to make a distinction between MMS and other data traffic.

This is correct for domestic charges.

Roaming charges can occur @ $0.30 per 10KB retreiving and sending.

Actually I thought that users did also get charged the GPRS data volume of their PXT, but the amount depends on what GPRS plan thay are on. If you are on the casual plan ($10/MB, 10c per 10KB) then you pay 50c for data on a 50KB PXT (typical camera phone size), but if you are on the Everyday 5 plan (5MB @ $3.00 per MB, 3c per 10KB) then you pay 15c for data on a 50KB PXT, and any e-mail/internet use would also be at the same rate.

Otherwise what happens when PXT's can be much larger, or video PXT? There has to be some relationship between amount of network resource used and price charged.

I can check and get back to you on this.

PXT does not come into GPRS usage. 20 cents is 20 cents. the MMSC has restrictions on the size of the PXT that can be sent. When roaming you get GPRS data rates 30 cents per 10kb

end of story.

Video PXT is Different again and thats a $1.00 charge. Flat rate as well

i just realised that iMate Smartphone2 doesn't do Video MMS... :-( how sad.. oh well...

BTW, how does Vodafone billing system distinguish what's a PXT MMS and what is Video MMS?

I have sent a few Pxt with a video attached and have gone through my bill and can't see any charge of $1??. But i am not sure if that is what they class Video Pxt? by attaching a clip in a normal mms measage.

Another thing which i thought Vodafone should do is include a summary of Pxt on there bill. They have everything like total Txt but no count on Pxt. It's kinda funny when you look at your total messages of the month and go OMG!!!! did i do that MANY!!!.

Dunno about you guys but i try to keep mine around the 100 message mark per month.

Anyone know what the size limit on a Vfone NZ MMS is?? how much data can i nest in there??

i've had a good play with telecom's MMS using SMIL, and you can embeded almost anything there - is there a restriction on content-type in vodafone's MMS?

I can do up to 100kb on nokia 6600

My old phone could only do 45kb

any restrictions on content?? i've only played with phones so far - suppose you used a Zire72, can you put sound, video - zip files.. pdfs.. OOo spreadsheets.... in a vfone MMS? any restrictions on what the MMS gateway will let you send from phone to phone?
Telecom lets me send just about anything, provided it's nicely wrapped.

Hmmm... That's interesting to know. But at 100KB limit, that would be a very small .pdf or .xls file

And as PXT seems to be the cheapest way to send content this would make a lot of sense.

Normally a user is charged for data they send AND receive. But with PXT, you only get charged 20c to send it (irrespective of data size up to the 100KB limit - 100KB would cost $1.00 on the casual GPRS rate plan) AND whoever you are sending it to gets charged $0.00 to receive it! Brilliant! Develop the ability to wrap any content into PXT and you are away laughing.

pxt was free on vodafone for sometime - so i always intended to spend some time working out what i could send through this...
even @ 20c/100kb, it's cheaper than sending via GPRS, which, @ 10c/kb, and you pay twice (sender and receiver are charged)
unfortunately i don't have a real OS access to vodafone's MMS.. maybe someone could rig up something for symbian that wraps zip files through MMS??

The only time you will be charged for incoming PXT is when you are out of your home country (roaming)
