I'm using a Samsung AH680 cell to connect to Earthlink from my laptop. I am running WinXP Pro, SP2. The cell's serial port has a max speed of 203.4 kpbs, and whenever I dial up, the connection speed is listed as "203.4 kpbs." Normally, I wouldn't care. However, Earthlink's compression/acceleration software will not enable acceleration if it detects a broadband connection -- like 203.4 kpbs -- and I am getting stuck with a really slow connection. I tried setting the port speed under Device Manager-->Modem Properties, but that has no effect. The port speed here shows up at 19.2, but connection speed is still detected as 203.4. Is there a version of an AT+IPR command I can use? Or...?

Any ideas on how to oversome this little issue would be appreciated.

Have you installed appropriate drivers to use the AH680 as a modem, or are you just connecting it and using without any special software? If you don't have appropriate drivers, then the speed you're seeing is the connection betweeh your laptop and the phone, not the connection to the network.

I am using the drivers that came with the AH680 USB cable, which I'm tentatively assuming are the correct ones. I did look for an alternate set of drivers online, but have not found them. If you can direct me to different set, I'd be happy to try them out and report back.

I do understand that 230.4 kbps is the computer to cell connection speed through the AH680's serial port... my problem is that this is being treated as the internet connection speed as well. My initial thought was that I could send an AT command in the modem init string to set a realistic max value that would then get passed on to the Earthlink software and trigger compression/acceleration. However, I have no idea how CDMA modems work with AT commands...

Alternately, I could, I suppose, figure out a way of permanently enabling compression in the Earthlink software. But I'd need advice on that from someone, too!

THis has nothing to do with the port and modem speed. The computer reads this info from the drivers. You could edit the INF file and change it to display a slower speed

Yes, the information is read directly from the INF's. It would also differ depending on if the driver is a hacked WDM modem driver or an MCCI based one. I believe the MCCI one does some slightly special things with regard to the port speeds via their serial driver.

That said, given your description of them 'detecting broadband' chances are it's probably IP based, so even if you slow your port speed its still going to be assign an IP in the same range, and the compression/proxy server isn't likely to take effect.

If it's not IP based theory is you'll have some sort of client program that you need to install to enable the compressin proxy.

Just some ideas.
