So, I had a look last night. I can't turn the handle upward, but I can push the latch all the way in with my finger, though it does seem to get stuck half way in about half the time. If I turn the handle down fully and press the latch in fully, and then release the latch it comes out to half way.

So the guy came out and "fixed" it. The door handle was "sticking" and the mechanism is worn. He managed to get it to "mostly" retract which allows the door to open and close, but he wasn't sure how long it would last. He didn't really say how worn, but we decided to see how it goes and replace at a later date. Some of these smart locks seem quite pricey and I guess we will hope we get another 12+ months out of this and see what the product offerings are like at the time.

We couldn't really see a lock that was ideal for us right now, and the Gateman III has been awesome.

We told them if a special came up to let us know as $800+ for the Samsung lock was a reasonable investment.

Thanks for the information/input.

Out of interest, which particular Samsung lock were you looking at for a future replacement?
Was it the SHP-DH525?

I'm looking into getting a new digital/smart door lock (to replace a tired/worn dumb lock), possibly either the Yale 3109+, or Samsung SHP-DH525.

P717

We need a lock big enough to cover the existing door lock. My wife quite liked the push pull thing. We decided against the biometrics version p718 because of the extra cost and also it's not that nice looking.

I can understand the handle and smarts changing but it's surprising that the mortise lock mechanism inserted in the door isn't available. It wouldn't be that different to standard door locks some of which haven't changed much in 50 years.

/me shrugs

No idea but I got the same answer from both companies I called who have sold gateman for a long time.

Bottom line, is if it's worn so badly as to need major replacement parts, it's probably time for a replacement to take advantage of the new technology.

Deferring it for a bit was a coin toss decision.
