After the penetrating lube, reverse cutting or left hand drills can be useful for removing stubborn screws.

I have one of the two screws out. Will need to spend more time on the other.

I have a spare window lock (it's not brand new as I had first thought) but will need new screws.

The spare window lock is a non-starter as it is 'left hand' and I need 'right hand'. Also the Fixing Centre is approx 47 mm and current fasteners I have seen on-line are 32mm.

Found this site with secondhand window locks (Double Catch Aluminum Fasteners – rummages.co.nz). This may be the only site in NZ having secondhand fasteners the same as mine.

I am not bothered whether the fastener is lockable (all our window locks are keyed alike and I don't really want a separate key).

The window wedges are riveted.

So, I'll remove the other screw and either investigate to see if a new fastener can use one of the two holes and then drill a new hole (and use the existing wedge) or just fit a brand new fastener.

I would have thought that wouldn't really work - because wouldn't the twist/spiral need to run up the drill in the other direction? Unless you use it running the drill in reverse.

Yep... reverse sharpened are the key words and of course running the drill in reverse.

The idea is that you are drilling out the screw and also maybe driving out the screw in the process.

It is the reverse sharpened cutting edge that does the work for drilling out screws.

There is not much waste the requires the flutes to clear cuttings.

I can tell you that after many years of sharpening drills with the correct cutting edge and then getting your head around reverse sharpening a regular drill takes some visual feat. It does work.
