It'll be fine, no need to paint it. General humidity won't be a problem. It's really only an issue if your MDF is getting puddles of water on it with no chance to dry.

Handle9: Why not just attach it to the plant with DIN rail? That’s how they are commonly installed although you’d normally run RTU back to the MCP so you don’t need to deal with getting power up there.

I've already got power + Ethernet up there and it leaves room for future expansion if I need to add other Ethernet devices.  I could in theory hook it onto the end of an existing RS485 run but that would mean looping it back up into the attic, and there's a fair bit of traffic already on that run so I don't know if there's room for extra traffic to things in the attic without reducing the polling frequency.

It’s modbus so if it’s actually Belden or similar it’ll run very happily. The run in a house is well within spec.

I’ve seen decent modbus performance on TPS, it’s such an ancient protocol it’s pretty robust

I've just been using Cat5 because it's cheaper and universally available.  The problem isn't the cable, it's continuing it from the end of the current run up to the attic, as well as the possible bandwidth constraints, polling a pile of registers on many devices at 9600bps takes awhile, while having two separate Modbus runs reduces the load on any one of them.

Most of my electronics have been fine in the roof.

There is a very noticeable humidity increase and dampness feeling when it is heavenly raining. I presume from my house's old roof tiles absorbing a lot of moisture.
