Bung:Ventura: If you do not use a splitter you need to add a filter between each phone and jack plug you use. Also if you have an alarm and use ADSL you then definately need a splitter or else the alarm will interfere with your ADSL signal as it will be unfiltered.
Have a look at this site- http://www.ees.net.nz/it/doingyourowntelephonewiring.htm
"Note: this page describes the phone wiring conventions in the United States. I'm not familiar with the phone wiring conventions outside the U.S., so the information here may not apply in your country."
Maybe to avoid confusion Zolly should indicate whether he is using or likely to use ADSL

sbiddle: Using BT jacks is also a waste of time (and money), RJ45's are the accepted norm these days and significantly cheaper.

cyril7: So no ADSL so no need for DSL filter, as I expected
But as Steve mentioned dont use BT's wire the Cat5e as structured cabling (ie fully wired RJ45 sockets and patch panels) so you can shove phone or data or both down it as suits.

For a business maybe... All bought phones have BT plugs though...

ZollyMonsta: Good lord I'm learning new stuff from this thread.
Ok now:
1. Running cat5e cables for all Internet and Telephone outlets to central cupboard (not on roof space)
2. Don't need a 'master' Phone socket any longer
3. No need for an adsl splitter since we use cable
4. Use RJ45 faceplates for network
5. Use RJ11 faceplates for phone
6. Zeon will send me a couple BT to RJ11 adapters ;-)
Was planning to use a nice PDL flush plate. Used them before and good with modules available.
Don't use rj11 plugs in rj45 outlets - it will bend the outer pins in the rj45 socket
rj45 --> rj11 cables are widely available and cheap
