You can probably get more than that out of an hour of power by using timers on existing devices like heat pumps, dishwasher, and clothes drier. If you happen to say shower at 6am you set the hour of power for that, turn all the heating on then too.

Jase2985:

without doing any power shifting we would likely only save about $10 per month, with power shifting it could be up around $20 but would require getting a timer fitted to the HWC at a cost.

So for us yes there is a small saving but not worth jumping and switching until we can shift more load.

Yes my feeling also a lot of micro management for $20/month saving which if you compared to the best an all inclusive rates on a fixed term would be wiped out next price increase within the term.

you would like to think that

we hardly use the dryer, and when we do its not worth waiting to use it at a specific time

we hardly use our heatpump, and we dont have a dishwasher. like i said we dont really have much power we can shuffle round bar the hot water cylinder but that will require either manual or automatic intervention and both come with a cost either $ or time.

Hour of free power is only off peak. This ends at 6am but works for me when I shower (and washing/dishwasher) at 5am.

Off peak is 9am to 5pm and 9pm to 6am.

I don't run a drier or heating (woodburner) and as a single householder my monthly bill averages at $36 with EK.

Highest HOP was 39%

Where I am in Wellington off peak ends at 7am. Your hour of power can be any time outside the peak periods 7-9am and 5-9pm. So in the morning the hour of power can be 6am to 7am.

I stand corrected. Has this changed recently or have I always misunderstood?

Yep, definitely the latter! We’ve been with EK for a number of years and, apart from in summer, have always run our free hour between 6 and 7- perfect for heating the house just before getting up.

dont trust the information you get from Powerswitch (if you used it), some of it is out of date and doesn't include the recent changes in power prices (EK for instance pricing if from FEB)

I am not a great fan of the powerswitch website as it is lacking a lot of detail that you need. This whole low user charging is also making the whole thing confusing and difficult to compare, because some companies have doubled their rate and will continue to rise daily rates over the next 4-5 years, where others haven't. The justifications for removing it IMO also don't make sense. IMO they should be encouraging people to reduce their power usage, not increase it, otherwise we will need additional generation sooner.

The only reason why I'm a low electricity user is because I have natural gas mains which take care of hot water heating, general heating, and stovetop cooking, which is obviously a good chunk of power that would otherwise be used via electricity.

I don't think it's fair at all that users in situations like myself now get penalised by having to pay more for the daily charges just because we have an alternate source of power. I wouldn't mind paying higher electricity unit charges for using less of it, but daily rate increases just mean I'm paying more for nothing gained.

Ten days ago I switched to EK MoveMaster plan and, in that time the cost of power consumed has been 38% less ($42.24) than I would have paid to previous provider (Nova). Some load shifting has easily been achieved by using timers in washing machine, dryer, dishwasher and ducted heat pump, none of which has caused any inconvenience. On the other hand, manual switching of water heating is a drag so will be having a timer fitted for that chore. Some 86% of consumption is now in off-peak times. Overall, well pleased with the change.

when you say off peak do you also mean shoulder periods? as well as the actual off peak times?

We are coming off a 18 month term with contact soon. I've crunched the numbers on our 2 year 30minute consumption data and found without shifting any usage the current plan actually very competitive without shifting usage.

For the past two weeks I've trialed turning off the HWC at 6pm and turning it back on at 9pm to simulate hour of power/off peak rates which shows we can get some savings if on plans like EK's move master.

Looking to get a DIN rail timer for HWC, anyone got good model recommendations and estimated costs? HWC has 3kW element.

I am looking at this Bluetooth timer set-up from the PDL Iconic range.
