To re-open this thread a couple of years on, as I’m interested to see if brand recommendations have changed in the interim…

We’re looking for a decent enough oven at a relatively affordable price point (around $2k); reliability and performance are more important to us than a multitude of features - though we would prefer it has include pyrolytic cleaning and soft closing. And we want dials over button/touch control. Also, prefer it be available in a dark finish, given the wider kitchen design and other appliances. The following models have all those features.

At this point the likely contender is this Bosch for $1890, which seems a decent oven but the cheap-feeling and shiny plastic knobs aren’t great and it comes with only one standard tray. There’s also an Asko, for around $2200, which is looks/feels nicer and has a good range of accessories - but I’m not sure about this brand in terms of either performance or reliability. And, finally, I like the simplicity of controls of this F&P model for $1804, but I’ve read enough (including this thread, Consumer survey etc) that F&P products are no longer particularly reliable.

Welcome any thoughts on the above models/brands based on any experiences over the past couple of years, or any other recommendations that would meet our preferences.

Many thanks.

PS - also looking at Bosch gas cooktop (this model) and a Bosch dish washer (this model) - any particular thoughts on these?

We have that HBG5780B0 oven and recommend it. Had similar criteria to you when replacing a no name Chinese unit and it is great. Very quiet, super quick to heat up, easy to clean, easy controls. The knobs are retracted in most of the time, so don’t see most of shiny. We bought another set of telescopic rails (much cheaper ex UK). We would buy again if needed.

Not so familiar with your other items/models but we have Bosch dishwasher and hob and had no issues and would buy again.

If you buy all from same supplier might get a decent discount.

My home came with a suite of F&P appliances and I hate them.

The oven looks identical to the one you linked and has a very similar model number. Whilst it is one of the more usable appliances supplied at my place, I find the touch sensitive panel infuriating. It starts activating functions every time I clean the front panel and sometimes it is difficult to figure out how to back out of any option or setting that I have unintentionally selected.

I'll never buy another Bosch Appliance whilst I am the primary decision maker. Their after sales service is appalling. Their dishwashers are awful.

Our F&P 60cm oven has been really great despite my reservations but it was one of their higher end ones. I liked it because it has a huge capacity despite being a standard 60cm model and the telescoping rails are excellent. We have had 2 issues waith it but F&P have been pretty good about one and the other was made more difficult because of staffing issues in the middle of covid. Still got sorted.

I would buy another.

Got 2 Bosch ovens, one standard, one microwave/oven, new build, 3 years old, no issues apart from we have the ones with rotary dials, and I hate them, so bloody awkward to set things.

One is steam, used it 4 or 5 times , couldn't see the benefit.

Mate and I  share recipes, he has an old school Shagalot or what ever its called, oven, and it kills my ditto cooks every time. His pork belly crackles, mine... nah

Edit: Should point out, another mates Bosch dishwasher outlasted my last Miele ( 15 years vs 13 years) bought around similar times

I had a Miele oven in my home for 10years, loved it. Miele support was excellent, even tho oven was out of warranty and we didn’t buy it, Miele continued to provide “warranty” parts at no cost 3 times, once for hob, once for microwave and once for oven.

Sold the house bought a 20yr old house that had a whirlpool oven, crap oven, so upgraded kitchen, did an extensive review of ovens based on this forum 2-3 years ago. Was keen to a good oven, however when it came time, we went downmarket and for <700 bought a 10 function 60cm haier wall oven. It had pyrolytic and rotisserie. It’s intuitive controls, and I like the interface. We did have a problem that we were delivered a bent oven, turns out it probably was a shipment that was in a dropped container as 2nd oven was bent in same places..

During kitchen Reno we used an airfryer and now that we have a new working well haier oven, I’m using the air fryer even more…

Pleased we didn’t over spend on the oven. Happy with the function and performance (speed to heat, and even heat) of the Haier.

Does anybody have any specific reccomendations, or am I missing anything from my list of thoughts/comparisons/things to be aware of below?

- Pyroletic seems a good thing - some you can leave rails etc in, some you can't

Be aware that you will then no longer be able to use aggressive but effective barbecue cleaners, as this would attack the surfaces.

- Meat probes are available on some models, unlikely to use

Nothing that you can't buy as an accessory if you need or want it.

- Never used a steam oven and they are a lot more expensive so not looking at these.

Overpriced function. You can use this steaming technology but you have to adapt your established recipes which is tedious.

- Draw sliders - sometimes these are full extension, sometimes not

You want the fully extendable ones.

- Draw sliders - sometimes these are movable, sometimes they are fixed

You want the removable ones, at least for cleaning. It depends on the installation and operating position whether you should use a baking trolley or individual grids.

- I have heard mention of different thermostat types (not sure if it as simple as analogue and digital)

Unimportant. It is more important that the oven has a low temperature difference between the set temperature and the actual temperature and can reach and keep a minimum temperature of 270 DegC, or even better 300DegC.

- Touch controls vs manual controls

A matter of taste, in my eyes a technical gimmick. It should be a reliable control element.

- Internal capacity can vary significantly for same external dimesnions

Then I would take a look at how well it insulates against burns, e.g. how hot the oven window and the sides get during operation. All these technical gadgets also take up space, which results in a smaller baking capacity.

We are open to others, thanks for any advice.

You are welcome. 😉 My answers are deliberately generic for those who find the thread and don't know what to look for.

I would be very disappointed with any GZer that would consider any appliance that lacks IOT functionality.

Not that the IOT is necessarily all that useful. I just think your geek creds are lacking if you would make such a purchase.

External power consumption monitoring, remote switch-off, wireless temperature sensor, multiple timers - all open source and manufacturer-independent in the own cloud. Who wants to (over) pay for all that and have the manufacturer know when you reheated last week's dinner? 😉

We bought this a couple of years ago too and think it's great, if that helps. I mirror phrozenpenguin's view

Thanks for the feedback, and in particular on the same Bosch oven (HBG5780B0) that’s on top of our list and looks like it’ll be what we go with.

@mulac & @phrozenpenguin - how do you find the internal space of this model? My sister reckons the Boschs are smaller on the inside than some of the others (I think she went with Electrolux, which is outside our pricerange).
Also, @phrozenpenguin, do you mind passing on (even if via DM) where you purchased your additional telescopic rails from? Thanks.

Disappointing to hear Bosch’s after-sales service may not be great, but I’m also hoping that would be balanced against a lower chance of us needing it!

As for retailers: we found that Kitchen and Things, which sells all three appliances we’re looking to get, has a bit cheaper price on two of them than anywhere else. But, more usefully, apparently they also don’t start the warranty period from the date of purchase but the date of installation, which is a great benefit - so one can puchase at any time to lock in a decent price.

I know that Samsung probably don't make ovens but I always tell people to avoid Samsung fridges and their whiteware.

We've been burnt with the purchase of the Samsung fridge, their after-sales customer service is down right non-existent, and they will not acknowledge CGA.

Actually, your assumption on that would be wrong! https://www.samsung.com/nz/cooking-appliances/all-cooking-appliances/

I was surprised to see a number of Samsung and Panasonic ovens when perusing the stores. But, yeah, I wasn’t keen on risking it with Samsung. Touch wood, our Samsung freezer has been trouble-free for many years, but I’ve read enough feedback from others to be wary.

I'm not sure the internet was invented when we had our last purchasing decision on the oven and cooktop.

We do have a pretty cool dishwasher that allows you to use NFC and an android phone to make your own wash programs, but we have iPhones and it's not iOS compatible.

with all of that said, we have been pretty happy with our DeLonghi oven and cooktop.
