Hi guys - what have you paid for a fence? Just a normal 1.8m high town fence.
I'm looking to build about 20m worth down one boundary, and wondering about a rough cost for a builder to do it, or for me to do it myself

It really depends on what you want it made out of.
If you want to use rough sawn fencing timber then its reasonably cheap. If you want really nice timber, or brick then it can cost more. What materials do you want to use?
About 6 years ago i paid half of $6k to have about 30 metres done in 1.8m rough sawn. Included a small amount of retaining in one section due to height gain compared to the neighbours section.
Seemed like a lot to spend but it was done in 2 days and i would have taken months :-)

Also factor in the cost of a concrete nib wall along the bottom, and make sure you don't let the bottom palings touch the ground, otherwise it just rots the boards. Our neighbours installed a fence about a year ago, and it has weeds growing up due to no nib wall, and moisture wicks up the planks, so it is already starting to go green at the bottom. Really bad job, but you get what you pay for..
elpenguino:Sounds pricey. Guessing they didn't install a nib wall if only two days. Generally it is a good idea to wait a week for the concrete piles to cure a bit, otherwise they could crack from the vibrations.

I have seen first time DIYers building a fence in 2-3 days. Wasn't great, but it was as good as some professionally built ones I have seen. They don't take as long as you think they will take.Digging the holes is the biggest job IMO
if you have look on trademe that will give you an idea of what people are charging
"1.8 metre roughsawn timber fencing prices starting at $80 per metre (incl. GST). This is for a solidly built fence using the larger 100x50 rails (no sagging) solid footings, hot dip galvanised nails etc etc.. " thats for auckland
In Christchurch I've heard of it being as cheap as $70/lm, but typically more like $100/lm, and up to $120/lm if it includes removal of an old fence and posts. That's for basic rough sawn 1.8m high
We paid about $110 per LM 5 years ago in Chch for a 30m fence done in standard raw sawn timber at 1.8m. That included removal of the old boundary hedge. The fence is immaculate and way better than I could have done. I than paid about $70 per LM (different builder) for 2 sections of 1.5 rough sawn fence on internal boundaries and the fence is just sh#t.
