I want to get fibre up and running before moving into a new build. Currently the rooms are being gibbed and stopped, so completion could be a month or so away. At what stage can Chorus normally be contacted to do an install? It seems it is all done in one go, rather than in stages like most installs on a new building.

Our builder buried conduit along the driveway during the build process; we had the fibre actually installed on the day we moved in; the internet was working before the moving truck arrived from the old house.

And I didn’t contact Chorus; it was all arranged via my ISP.

Just call your provider now and place an order. Lead times vary for a variety of reasons - technician availability being just one of them. At least if you book it in now you can get the scope visit scheduled for around a week before you move in. If there are any civil works required, Chorus can likely get these done in the week between the scope and when you move in, meaning that the full install can probably be completed on your move in date.

I would say when electricity is finished, you are good to go.

If you are going to do any of the trenching/conduit work yourself then be careful what conduit you run in-ground. Chorus have been known to refuse to install fibre in stuff that wasn't adequate. I don't know what specifically was put in ground but the sparky said 'she'll be right' and well, she wasn't. I've since heard conflicting info on how anal the guy has to be to make a stink over this, but I would call Chorus for advice in writing before doing that sort of thing yourself.

I've certainly heard stories of installation being refused because the conduit was the wrong colour. I understand different colours are reserved for different underground services but don't pretend to know any more than that.

I found that I could only request it when we were actually living there, somebody had to be at home. As we didn't have copper, we had to use mobile internet for some time. I had to email / call a lot with my ISP and Chorus to get things done.

That is a good point. We did put in the specs the the sparky was responsible for making sure that it was all up to standard and to check with chorus that the right pipe has been used. I think they are using the green stuff, so if it isn't right they will have to come back and fix it up .

Two of my sons finished building new houses this year.

 

For both we ran the red fibre conduit from the boundary to the ETP and a black fibre conduit from the ETP to the ONT location.

 

Both houses had their fibre UFB working several weeks before they moved in (immediately after the brickwork was completed).

 

ISP = BigPipe, connection by Enable in Christchurch.

Some valid points. The other one that is important is if you have an address or not. If its a subdivision without an address then your ISP will have difficulty ordering Fibre, regardless of the state of the physical build. We moved into a place, and despite having the fibre at the boundry, the conduit laid etc, could not get Fibre installed for weeks as the ISP and Chorus had to jump through a load of hoops in order to get our address in the database!

 

I think Chorus have a PDF which details expectations on conduit, cabinets etc for a new build.

So I recently moved into our newly built home about 6 weeks ago. Here is how it worked for me. We're in a new house, in a new subdivision, the first one to be built. Large conduit was run from the road down the shared driveway when it was built, about 500m or so, we had smaller conduit going from a box where our driveway met the shared one, all the way up to the ETP. I believe the black microduct was inside the green conduit, but I might have that wrong.The electrician actually stuck a box on the wall as an ETP which chorus replaced because it was the wrong type. Conduit then went through the external wall to our data cabinet, which was pretty much on the other side of the wall so not very far.

 

 

 

Here's how I organised it. When I found out the property had been allocated a address with council I kept checking the chorus site until it appeared there. The developer I think has to contact chorus so they add you to the map. So about a month out from when I thought we'd be moving in, I contacted my new ISP and told them that we were in a new subdivision, and all the conduit etc was run to the ETP etc, and made a connection date for a few days before move in date. So chorus didn't come around to do onsite consultation or anything, I just got a date they would come and install the fibre. I was off work that week so I was there for the install. They turned up on the day, checked they were satisfied with everything, I think they ended up using a different microduct from the ETP location to the cabinet. They got stuck blowing the fibre so they tried it the other direction and were successful that way. Then they installed the ONT into the cabinet, stuck the modem on, and everything worked.
