Hello,

Looking for some advice. We had our hot water cylinder removed and I’d like to convert the old switch to a dual wall socket. Is it fairly straight forward wiring job and changing the rated fuse on the fuse board?

TIA

Extremely easy job - for a registered electrician.

Best to get an electrician is the advice you will get here as if you need to ask then you shouldn't really be touching it. The wire size would be different and is the circuit on ripple control?

You have to get an electrician in to do it. The wiring probably has to be changed from the controlled hot water heating circuit to an RCD protected breaker on the normal supply. You can't just fit a socket.

for an electrician - no.

1 - it's on ripple control, there is a bit of re-wiring to do in the switchboard - Under homeowner exemption you are NOT allowed to do any work in a switchboard

2 - All new sockets must be on a RCD, so this means a RCD must be fitted at the switchboard.

3 - The size of the wiring must be checked, depending on the age of the house it may be wired in 1.5mm or even 1.0mm if really old, typically you need 2.5mm for a socket, but checks will be required.

4 - Should you manage to achieve all of the above - it must be checked by an Electrical Inspector(not an electrician) who will do the final connection at the switchboard and issue a Cert. of Compliance. - this could easily cost you the same as getting an electrician to do the job.
