Hi

I'm wiring up some 240v LEDs. I have a roll of Belden 4 core shielded control cable, 0.75mm, model 514-3922. My question is can I use this instead of buying 1mm flat cable? The connection to the switchboard is all done, just using this cable to daisy chain extra lights.

Thanks

Mike

Ex-sparky here, I wouldn't do that if I were you.

Best go through this with a sparky than here.

Although things may have changed I was taught to use 1.5mm2 for lighting circuits, best to talk with a sparky and run the correct cable then they can terminate it etc.

Thanks for the quick reply. 1.5 it is then. Better using the right cable.

FYI, it may not be the right cable anymore hense why I say talk with a sparky and arrange for them to terminate it. Pretty sure you still need the completed work tested and connected by a registered inspector. Read here from EWRB

Switch board can only be done (legally) by an electrician - homeowners cannot do this.

Homeowners are only allowed to extend TPS circuits - the belden cable is not TPS and totally unsuitable for a domestic lighting circuit.

Before you liven any work it must be checked by an Electrical Inspector (not an electrician) and have a COC issued by the inspector for said work.

Really need to get this stickied in the DIY section so then Home Owners and DIYers are aware that they can't legally carry out this type of electrical work. The lack of knowledge when carrying out this work is not surprising.

To expand on the answer for anyone who's interested, most cable insulation is not rated
A for mains voltage
B for outdoor use, resistance to sun etc.

If you can't find the specification for the cable you have (and confirm it is rated for outdoor and / or mains use) be safe and buy genuine, fair dinkum, organic, free range mains cable from your favourite vendor.

0.75mm cable will not be rated to 1000v, also it will not be appropriate for the circuit protection which is the far bigger issue here.

Thanks all. I'll get the appropriate cable. Trying to save a few bucks but not worth it.

I've wired whole houses before. Then the sparky has done the switchboard end, checked my work and been happy to sign off as theirs.

Cheers

Mike
