We’ve built a sleepout next to our house as a rumpus for the kids.

I arranged a quote to get 5 electric sockets installed. The quote came back at almost $7000 incl gst

Given their rates are ~$100 per hour this seems extraordinarily high.

The sleepout is 3m from the house and I said I would dig the trench!

I almost fell off my chair.

Anyone had quotes recently?

Sounds like the sparkie has too much work on and just wanted to make you go away.

To answer your questions

1. Still getting quotes. This is the first one.
2. Sleepout is a wooden cabin so all stuff is surface Mount
3. Switch board is 4m from house exterior so about 7m to cabin although
4. No it was not itemised. Hence my dismay. If I quoted someone like that I’d get laughed at.

@Cyril yes that’s what I was thinking.

Strangely this crowd also charged $150 to come and quote.

This is a huge red flag straight away for me - immediately no. The only time I would ever allow someone to charge to give me a quote is if they're going to credit/discount that fee against the final bill.

I hope you didnt pay them. To charge to come out to quote and then not even bother to provide an itemised quote is on the level of negligence and is probably breaching some law somewhere.

Flip that's an amazing business model. They don't even need to be a sparky. Just show up, say a few words that make them sound like they could be one. Then fire through a unrealistic quote and collect $150 for 30min work.

If the quote is accepted for some reason, sub it out and still turn a profit.

No I haven’t paid.

The company is question is relatively well known in Wellington and has good reviews so I was willing to take a punt.

Yes the $150 is deductible from the quote should I accept bud for $7k I won’t be accepting.

Far too much
My mate got his electrical quit itemised out, and they were charging the cable out at $16 a metre, when their buy price was around the $1-$2 metre

Not including an upgrade on the main switchboard in that price? Did you contact a commercial-focused company that doesn't really want to do domestic work?

Some itemisation includes labour in the price of materials, at which point that might not be too unreasonable. Depends on the job.

If you didn’t pay the $150, I guess that means they quoted without visiting the job.

It’s a bit hard to follow this. How can the $150 be deductible if it hasn’t been paid? Do they now want you to pay $150 so they can come out and quote again, properly?

Yeah way over the top. I know prices have gone up recently, but here's a quote from 18 months ago that came out to 8k incl:

Supply and install:
- 2 x Bathroom Extraction Systems
- 3 x Twin LED Sensor Light fittings
- 6 x LED Batten Fittings
- New power supply trenched ~20m 2 x circuits (1 x 20A Power, 1 x 10A Lighting) Includes all trenching and machine operation etc.

Yes, this includes ~20m of trenching. North Auckland company.
