Our paling fences are stained black, i wish to stain them medium to dark brown. Google tells me to do all sorts of prep, but one says you may need to paint twice to change the colour

Fence is too big for any sanding type prep (I'll hose off loose dirt, and spray with white vinegar to remove the biology)

I'm hoping that spraying with a brown stain twice or even three times will sort it, but will the stain, stain the wood, or just sit on top?

Email Resenes technical people.. Stain isn't paint, so I suspect the black will show through depending on how dark the brown is, and may also likely wear back to black. But these days people tend to stain their fences black I have just done this using cool colour stain.

The OP could also consider alternatives like dry-brushing on brown, so it'd be brown highlights on a black background which avoids having to deal with the black stain.

Take forever lol. What I see is that stain, stains. But if you stain over it, it may or will not soak in, thereby not staining. Im feeling maybe I should just prep it as best I can and use fence paint.

Photos may help to get an idea on what they are trying to achieve. Personally I think black is good because it makes green plants in front of it pop. But it can cause warping if the fence isn't built well, and is one reason I use resenes cool colour stain and never had a problem with it.

I think you will need to use fence paint to change the colour, not fence stain. Give it a good waterblast, then 1 - 2 coats of fence paint. I prefer hand application, it goes on thicker and lasts longer. I have tried spraying a fence one, never again! Spent the next month cleaning over spray off windows, walls, and paths. It's amazing how far that stuff drifts despite all possible precautions.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I think I will go down the fence paint route, and spray. The only overspray issue is the top of the fence, I can brush that or find some flat material to sit on the top of the fence as I spray

Looking at Wagner sprayers, but saw this one, seems to good and cheap to be true? Ozito is a budget brand but Ive read here others using Ozito products and happy with them
