The safety screen covering my incinerator barrel is disintegrating. Our useless hardware stores can't seem to think of anything other than mosquito screens or chicken wire. Where can I find suitable fireproof mesh to keep burning particles from escaping?

Try some expanded mesh.
Comes in lots sizes. Just not sure where you could get small quantity

How thick and what size holes are you after? Do you think it's a wire or sheet product?

I'm just looking for something that won't burn up and has reasonably small openings to trap burning particles inside. Any small mesh that lets airflow through but keeps anything rising on the flames from escaping. Expended mesh would work fine but as pointed out, it is hard to find in such small quantity. I only need enough to cover the top of a barrel.

Mitre 10 has this https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/md-products-lincane-aluminium-sheet/p/291136 not convinced its suitable for your use case though. There are several different patterns.

Thank for the suggestion. It might or might not be brilliant but I'm afraid my use case does not extend to paying $119 for something just to cover the top of a burn barrel! I will keep looking.

My experience is that I will eventually stumble across something not intended for this kind of use at all that perfectly fits my need.

Try a metal fabricator, someone that makes fireguards and the likes. I'm sure they'll be able to suggest something.

Next time you're in town, pop past this crowd and see if they have any offcuts from projects they have on. Otherwise any of you local engineering firms will often have an offcuts bin - they can be a lucky dip but you won't know without popping in and asking.

I think a mesh product from this company is likely to be what you’re looking for. You could contact them for advice/comments on availability/your size requirement etc.

Back in the day when I was a kid my neighbour would put a piece of old corrugated iron over the barrel with a brick on top. I can only assume there was enough air sucking in through the corrugations or he may have had it slightly skewed. You could drill a few large holes in the high parts. Call a roofer in the area and ask for a couple of offcuts.

This ^ A few YT clips on burn barrels advocate cutting the top so that it becomes a lid but corrugated iron lasted well enough on the family incinerator.

Old roofing iron is better than today's paper thin Colorsteel.
