There is specific wording in the copyright amendment act -

26 Definitions of TPM terms

In sections 226A to 226E, unless the context otherwise requires,—

TPM or technological protection measure—

(a)

means any process, treatment, mechanism, device, or system that in the normal course of its operation prevents or inhibits the infringement of copyright in a TPM work; but

(b)

for the avoidance of doubt, does not include a process, treatment, mechanism, device, or system to the extent that, in the normal course of operation, it only controls any access to a work for non-infringing purposes (for example, it does not include a process, treatment, mechanism, device, or system to the extent that it controls geographic market segmentation by preventing the playback in New Zealand of a non-infringing copy of a work)

TPM circumvention device means a device or means that—

(a)

is primarily designed, produced, or adapted for the purpose of enabling or facilitating the circumvention of a technological protection measure; and

(b)

has only limited commercially significant application except for its use in circumventing a technological protection measure

TPM work means a copyright work that is protected by a technological protection measure.

Section 226: substituted, on 31 October 2008, by section 90 of the Copyright (New Technologies) Amendment Act 2008 (2008 No 27).

My interpretation of that means that defeating geoblocks is perfectly legal if what you are watching allows you to watch it in your area. I guess this is the "grey" area, in that Netflix etc are only able to give copyright in each market, so by circumventing geoblocks, you are watching illegal material (?)

This is ofcourse only a slice of the legislation but seems to apply. There are other provisions whereby the person parallel importing the content has to have reasonable grounds to assume (or prove) that the works do not infringe on the rights of the copyright holders. Again, with Netflix, its hard to argue that you don't know that they aren't allowed to sell viewing rights in different markets.

Colleague uses it all the time. It's 720P HD in the web browser and there are no ad's. It's a legit service. I have seen the PQ and it's good.

Just took a look at it, looks dodgy as hell.

Doesnt look legit to me.

I'm going to give SlingTV a try this season since ESPN seems to have most of the cricket rights. The Sling Orange package has ESPN and ESPN 2, plus you can add Willow and Willow 2 using the "world cricket mini" add-on.

Yes I have watched a match on youtube as well, the quality wasn't that great.

$12 for all the matches in HD is worth it if you ask me.

Does Willow TV definitely have NZ Black Caps games?  I'd thought I'd checked previously and they didn't.  I seem to remember that you could get them from one of the ESPN channels available through Sling TV though.

Willow doesn't carry all of the Black Caps fixtures (so far they only have the 2018 Tri-Series listed), but I figured the SlingTV Orange package (including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN 3) with the Willow mini add-on would cover all the bases. ESPN appears to hold Black Caps broadcast rights for the USA. If you have the Orange package it also gives you the ability to use the WatchESPN app by logging in with your SlingTV credentials. I'm certainly going to try it. You can get a free trial (which I used about a year ago - quality seemed great).

"Global mode" disappeared from NZ ISPs after the Media crowd told them they would sue them over similar issues,

I can tell you categorically Global Mode was not removed because of any doubt it would be proved legal, it was removed because it was going to cost upwards of $6M in legal fees to defend and the business case for keeping it could not support that amount of money.

I don't recall making that statement but for what it's worth, I had assumed it was the costs in defending the case was the reason they elected not to fight it.

Willow TV seems easy enough to get, either as part of a Sling TV package, or as a stand alone app (on Apple TV4).  However, I can't find any of the Black Caps' coming matches in their schedule.  Do they just not do NZ games, or is there something I'm missing here?

Willow seems like a good option in general, but completely useless for a Kiwi cricket fan.  So, is ESPN they only legit'ish option?

It depends on rights holders I think. Willow has some Black Caps games currently scheduled (a tri-series in 2018, from memory) and they may add others closer to the time as broadcast rights are secured. That's why I'll be getting the Sling + Willow package - hopefully either ESPN or Willow will cover what I want to watch.

The difference between the options is a big difference in price.  i.e. Willow alone is around $10 - $12 USD I think, whereas Sling Orange + World Sport add-on is around $30 USD.

However, I can't see Willow alone will be an option.  The Black Caps start a tour in India in a bit over a month (22 Oct), so I would have thought TV rights etc would already be well and truly locked down.  But nothing is scheduled on Willow. So they must not have it.

I haven't sussed out longer term schedules for ESPN channels.  I guess I'll keep an eye on them as Black Cap games approach.  Note, the benefit of ESPN, is they also carry NZ rugby (on ESPN3).  However, while some channels within Sling can do PVR functionality, the Disney owned ones (incl. ESPN) don't.  So end of year games in the middle of the night aren't great.

I'm going to get Sling Orange and there's a Willow Mini add-on which I think is just $5 extra. I believe ESPN is probably the best bet for Black Caps coverage.

I agree around the Sling Orange, although I might wait to pull the trigger on that. But, for me at least, I just can't see any value in Willow (as add-on or stand-alone) until they get Black Caps rights.  I guess if you want non-Black Capos games it has definite value though.
