Will the performance be identical, on an Android TV, if we compare it to an Android box around the $100 mark (S905 quad core or S912 octo core with 2gb memory)?
My cousin has it installed on his Sony TV.. I reckon it was a little more sluggish than my android box(xaiomi mibox) but it works just fine.. hes a bit of a geek too and he hasn't felt the need to change..
One other thing to keep in mind if you choose an android box is that a lot of them are "capable" of running 4k but there is no 4k or even at times HD support in apps like Netflix and youtube and other streaming apps services.. something to keep in mind if you ever do decide to use it for something else other than Kodi..
my 2016 sony 55" android is super slow, i dont even use it, i just have a fire tv plugged into instead
my 2016 sony 65" is fine. a little sluggish at times, but good enough.
but do you mean Android TV == a box/tv running actual "Android TV" ie mibox, nvidia shield tv, sony tvs, TCL tvs. vs a generic android box made for TVs?
i wouldnt touch a generic android box. i would go for an mi box and get proper "Android TV" (better remote support).

I've already got one and it runs perfectly well. I'm planning on another couple of TV's in the house and I like the idea of it running through the TV and not needing an extra device.
a Mi Box is the same price, or close enough, and it runs proper "Android TV". avoid the generic android running on a box for a mi box.
you can run all the same apps on a proper "Android TV" box, but you also get the better interface and better supported proper apps like netflix with true remote support etc.
I run Kodi on my Sony TV, and on a Shield. They're both running Android, but different versions (7 and 8 respectively).
The Sony TV is fine for 1080p content but buffers constantly on high bitrate 4K. The Shield however, handles 4K just fine. In my experience using an ethernet connection is also more reliable.
