Apparently Perth has contained the outbreak, how do they know that after just a few days?

They've never used those exact works and don't necessarily believe it's fully contained at this point but following standard processes of contact tracing and testing of contacts they believe there is little likelihood of further spread. Exact same processes both countries have used for the past few months when there have been cases.

Twitter did not specify which content it had taken down but media reports say it includes a tweet from a politician in West Bengal holding Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly responsible for Covid deaths, and from an actor criticising Mr Modi for holding political rallies while the virus raged.

While in Fiji the signs are not too flash as the number of new cases continues to grow with 12 new cases,  but the all appear to be linked

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

As well as having established a clear path of transmission from the border and contact tracing & testing with genomic testing available routinely in NZ/Aus, they test sewage for viral RNA fragments.  They've actually found C-19 RNA in sewage in NSW 3 times in the past week, but at very low levels, need very high CT cycles to detect it, so there's no chance of genome matching, it's assumed to be shedding from recovered cases in the community.  We've seen the same / similar here.

Herald's covid headlines today

12 new cases of CT confirmed in Fiji.

I hope they find out what the implications are of the C-19 variant in India.

It seems to be "talked down" by some experts, at least as a possible "escape variant" lest that contribute to vaccine hesitancy. (ie - "what's the point of having a vaccine if it doesn't work?").

Hopefully the Perth situation creates further debate in NZ about the suitability of hotels, but I don't think it will since the head of MIQ despite not being an HVAC engineer believes hotel ventilation poses a very low risk of spread. Certainly it Australia it's further opening the can of worms about where people should be housed and really does point out the limitations of hotels.

I'm no HVAC engineer either but I would be extremely surprised is simple economics didn't sway with modifying existing buildings (hotels) to compartmentalise HVAC systems (Govt picking up the tab) as opposed to building purpose designed brand new facilities from the ground up.

Where do they go if hotels are ruled out? What large buildings don't use HVAC?

The issue is how the HVAC system is engineered. In many hotels it's a positive pressure system that brings in fresh air from corridors into rooms and extracts air via the bathroom which is what creates the airflow. In those types of cases it's really simple to see why spread can occur between rooms on a floor if somebody infected is in a corridor.

There have been been plenty of examples during testing of positive pressure systems turning into negative pressure systems sucking air from rooms into the corridor. Most older high rise buildings are not individually ducted ventilation into each room as some people would think.

The Australian reports particularly the Melbourne one is great reading if you're interested in reading further.
