Fred99: It's going to stink - literally.  You can't vapourise hair with laser beams without that.

Based on what I read about the tech, it just breaks some chemical chain or other, and only in hair.  It doesn't burn it.

I think people would be concerned that it will kill the hair at the root, and whether there are any potential issues with damage to the skin from the laser over a prolonged period. This sort of thing I can imagine needs quite a lot of R&D.

sbiddle:

Such a product (assuming it works) is a total game changer in this world. The current razor industry is a multi billion business where R&D investment isn't in the millions of dollars, it's in the hundreds of millions of dollars. All of this poses the question - is this product really can deliver it's got the potential to be absolutely massive. How can they only be wanting $160,000? Even their $2 million that they've got is pocket change to many VC companies. Why did no VC company grab a stake when the returns would be massive?

I think the bigger competition are the companies that make conventional electric shavers, like Philips and Braun. These ones that make disposable are essentially selling an ongoing service. Whereas an electric shaver is a generally a one off purchase which you may need to buy need heads every few years, which is possibly a similar life to the laser type shaver.

sbiddle: I hadn't actually seen that before and my initial thoughts are that it's potentially one of the best inventions in the last few years.. Which in itself poses more questions that it answers.

While I haven't looked in depth at this project a recent trend on the site is that a project often will take a ton of VC/Investment money and then use the Kickstarter as more of a marketing/validation step rather than being required to get to market.

Wondering whether I should grab one of these early ones or wait for a production model. Production may cost more, because it's new and cool, or they may be cheaper through pass production.

I predict issues and class actions with these gimmicks devices. But I guess the developers will make some cash and bolt.

Spend 1% of the price and spend the savings on useful things.

Or use KickStarter as a cheap retail outlet when otherwise they would be not visible to consumers.

Well it's burning something, even if it's so well directed/confined that there's no smell.
"Is it patented?" - "Oh Yes!".

It was inevitable. Kickstarter is for funding production runs not r&d.

It does show there is a need and appetite for a crowd funded r&d market with product benefits.

The risk profile is very different to funding a production run.

And I was so looking forward to the 5-laser razor.

I'm thinking I'll wait for it to be proven and refined before I splash out.

Probably very sensible.  Was talking to someone today about this concept, they worked in lasers for a while and think this is very unlikely to produce the results you are expecting, for anywhere NEAR the kind of money most people would consider spending on a razer.
