People are pretty good at supermarkets. More likely causes of CT would be people stopping to chat while out for a walk. I swear some people have no idea how far 2m is.

They don't at our supermarket.. They've had to boost the reminder signs on each isle to remind people (must have been more complaints). Lineup outside. All good.

Make you take in a trolley for distance.. nevermind parking it in the isle and standing the other side and leaving 20cm to get past.

Once inside.. free game! I got asked by a lady right behind me why I was waiting - for 3 others making up their mind blocking the way!

This was gold. About sums up why the numbers still increasing in the US.

I agree. Nothing has been caught there. Its almost all caught by close contacts in clusters and homes of travellers/clusters. It seems fairly easy to spread, going by clusters. Maybe its fairly easy to spread in a long term close contact situation (wedding, rest home) but hard to get all the ducks lined up even in a supermarket. What if you get a very diluted dose? It takes a while to grow to a proper dose, have antibodies been able to deal to it while it was in a very low dose?

Tomorrow will be interesting, over 13000 tests the last two days, not much to show for it, lets see what these 13000 show by 9am tomorrow when they all have results up to that time. Probably 3 to 5 cases, from clusters, that we expect. Leaving zero from general spread, let alone CT

I have to admit I haven’t been in the last two weeks, maybe people have gotten more complacent since I last went.

This story said that this person who sadly passed from it a few days ago, says they likely got it from a supermarket in the south, and appears to be a case of CT. The general public wearing masks will become a joke. As I’ve seen today alone at the supermarket, 9 people wore masks (not supermarket staff, but general public).

Of the 9, I watched:
Two being worn without covering the nose.
One male with a beard and the beard meant the mask didn’t actually cover anything.
One person who pulled the mask down to cough
One person pull the mask down to scratch their nose.
Two people with masks around their necks while they talked on cellphones.

Masks only work when you are appropriately trained and worn correctly. Otherwise they are a waste and taking valuable PPE from those who need it. If 7/9 people seen wearing them can’t get it right. Then what is the point in making it compulsory?

I don't see that as obvious at all.

To me, it appears that early on they (the Japanese people, not just the government) made extreme efforts to control the virus, at least in part because of the prestige (and cost) of the Olympics. As the Olympics receded, so restrictions have lifted and people become less careful, and the virus has begun to spread again.

i guess you are not as cynical as me when huge sums of money and prestige on the world stage are involved in what Governments will do.

The point I was making was that making any recommendation for this is incredibly difficult because there are all sorts of consequences to anything you say. And medical staff don't automatically have priority access, see numerous writeups about the wild-west free-for-all overseas in terms of getting access to PPE. We're lucky in that we (apparently) have some local manufacturing capacity that the government can (presumably) lock down for medical use only, but that doesn't seem to be enough:

Another follow-on issue in the US is that if you tell everyone to wear masks and then restrict available stocks to medical staff only, it's not unlikely you'll get a bunch of nutcases armed with assault rifles turn up at your desk to liberate the PPE from the evil gummint holding onto it for themselves.

I thought you said (non n95 masks) don't work at all. Therefore it shouldn't matter what they say and what the consequences are?

I'm going to skip discussion of N95 and surgical masks, because the general public shouldn't be buying these. Leave these to the medical professionals. Who knows? Maybe by not buying these, you could be saving your own life if you're hospitalized.

OK, so around non-medical masks, you're not protecting yourself. You're protecting others.

If someone coughs or sneezes in masks made out of simple fabrics, like a tshirt cotton, a good portion of the droplets carrying the virus are trapped.

While it won't be helping the person who's infected, it will be helping everyone around that person.

I protect you. You protect me.

True normal, ie as it was this time last year, say, is at least another 5 years away I think.

Semi-normal is not too far away as far as normal day to day stuff goes but with little or no international travel, a world recession looming and continued virus issues overseas we need to keep out, we have a reasonable haul before us yet I fear.

And it's not really "solar light", it's UV, which is widely used for medical sterilisation. Google "UV light" or similar and you'll find an endless supply of lethal flesh-burning UVC lamps being offered from China. I'm genuinely surprised we haven't heard horror stories around misuse of those yet, given how dangerous they are if you don't know exactly how to use them.

The manufacturer of disinfectants Lysol and Dettol said today ”we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route),”

This is after William Bryan of the DHS said yesterday at a White House corona briefing that researchers were looking at the effects of disinfectants on the virus.

Trump wondered aloud if they could be injected into people, saying the virus “does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

Bryan also said “emerging results” from research show UV light has a powerful effect in killing the virus on surfaces and in the air.

Trump then mused about bringing UV light "inside" their bodies to kill the deadly virus..o_0
