Thanks for clearing those up for me.
Shame about the traffic light thing being in FSD. I’m not paying $11000 to get that.

Yeah I don't recommend it right now here in New Zealand. It's quite possible they will bring back what is called "Enhanced AutoPilot" as an add on package which is $5700 which gives you all the same features that is currently available with FSD (except the chime on green function and reacting to traffic lights while on autopilot). This includes:
When they brought it back for a limited time last year I chose to but it and I do use most of those features everyday and I feel that it's worth the $5700 - not so much $11k. The good thing is that if they do bring it back and you buy it, that cost is deducted from the upgrade to FSD if you choose to buy that in the future.

It’s shame you can’t do a “pick’n mix” of features you would like activated. It is only software after all. I would happily rent the additional features for a couple of months to see how much they were used. The plus side is adding those features post purchase at least keeps the cost below the threshold. If only they could do that with the Long Range to bring it below $80k. Maybe by temporarily ‘deactivating’ the front motor or reducing the battery ‘capacity’ in the software (or supplying the wheels or rear seat as an aftermarket accessory ;-D) to have the vehicle come in at, oh I don’t know, $79995 on road.
Someone else having control over whether your car works or not, even for things like which chargers you can use, provides a small amount of discomfort. But I guess that invades many areas of our lives these days. Not that I’m suggesting Tesla would be like that, but I remember when Google’s motto was “Don’t be evil”.
My wife thinks the Model 3 is ugly (I don’t). So I don’t see any point in waiting for the Y because it looks like the product of a one night stand between a Model 3 and a Model X. At least the BMW I tried was a PHEV, so all is not lost for EVangelists.

Eventually the monthly subscription option for the FSD package will make its way to NZ. It's available in the US at the moment but they haven't rolled that out to other markets yet.
FWIW, my partner also thought the front of the Model 3 wasn't a great looker, but after two years of owning it has since come around to its looks (or at least, doesn't bring it up anymore 😅)

I'm not holding my breath for true level 4 or 5 self-driving within the economic life of even a brand new Model 3 so I'm happy for that money to stay in my pocket until such time as it arrives and then I'll consider it. Might be something I would buy on whatever replaces the Model 3 in what I hope to be a long time from now. I think having the speedometer on a screen next to me instead of just below eye level on the dash will take some getting used to but for the other features - well, I've only had a reversing camera since I bought the Leaf so I won't miss not having a little orange light on the wing mirror! The last two cars we had prior to the Leaf were old enough to vote before they finally limped their last trip to the wreckers.

Yeah, it's for this reason I recommend Enhanced Autopilot (if it ever comes back to NZ), the features that come with it I feel are worth the price.
As for the speedo, I think you'll get used to it a lot quicker than you think you will. I'm still of the opinion that you have a better view of the road glancing to the left vs glancing downward.

I was comfortable with it after an hour’s test drive, which surprised me. Still not as good as a HUD though.

Wondering why with all the other tech on this vehicle there is no HUD. I would miss mine on my Mazda if the next car didn't have one.

The only experience I've had with a HUD is on my partners 2019 work Mazda. I personally don't see its worth and when I'm wearing my polarised sunglasses it's difficult to see

I don’t use polarised sunglasses and HUDs with speed, road sign limit and navigation symbols are invaluable in busy environments. The BMW also had basic media/caller info and something I hadn’t seen from anyone else in that it displayed Google navigation rather than the oem nav if you were using Android Auto. I know Tesla doesn’t use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but integrating its pretty impressive nav presentation wouldn’t be too hard.
Musk doesn’t want HUDs in his vehicles. I believe it is because the push is towards autonomy, so why would you need to have info in your field of view if you’re not looking outside? It’s a shame because the layout of the 3/Y would lend itself to a projector on the dash if it was allowed to talk to the car’s system.
Chip shortages and other supply ‘difficulties’ mean lots of manufacturers are unable to offer things like HUDs, wireless charging and even lumbar support! Tesla seems unaffected.

The lack of Android auto would annoy me; I still haven’t found any substitute for the traffic info and quick accurate destination searching

The Tesla navigation isn't too bad, Google Maps and some other layer for route planning .. plus you can always "share" destinations to the car from apps on your phone (pick your destination and the share it to Tesla to plot a route), the car gets info about heavy traffic same as Google maps does on your phone with big red lines all over Auckland no matter the day :-)
I certainly had no problems with the nav in the Model 3. I bristle at having to pay hundreds for car nav map updates when there is a free* alternative. So as long as Tesla nav doesn’t move to a subscription model then it is adequate.
To me the advantage of Android Auto is access to things like Spotify and iHeartRadio and GAssistant. Tesla’s OS seems to have those covered. It was difficult to assess properly in a limited test drive.
I was watching some disturbing info on impending price rises for the 3, and for the Y before it even arrives here.
*Google is mining your movement data. Very little these days is without cost.

Without going back through 27 pages, has anyone been brave enough to go with the white interior? It would seem, having watched multiple videos, that you are setting yourself up for heartache if your Model 3 is your pride and joy. Looks great new, but after a couple of years……
