now, unfortunately 12.
http://www.3news.co.nz/nznews/12-died-on-nz-roads-this-holiday-period-2016010507#axzz3wK29ozz0

However, it does seem the speed thing got through.

I listened to someone on Radio Live this morning, just after the 7am news, and from the research he'd done, only 3 deaths were the result of speed, and interestingly, these were older drivers.

One thing the person being interviewed would like to see is fences at the side of the road to prevent people crashing into ditches\trees\poles etc and median barriers along all NZ roads, as this accounted for the higher percentage of fatal crashes.

Whether there should be more roads like the Waikato Expressway and Te Puke bypass out of Mt Maunganui\Papamoa is probably the way to go, but is hugely expensive.

And having just recently driven the new toll road that bypasses Te Puke, although it may save time, it's very boring to drive.

Geektastic: This is easily solved.

Your parents are not driving instructors. They should not be teaching you to drive.

I think this has a lot to do with the general poor driving skills in Kiwiland.
I've sat through 45 hours of paid lessons (@ 75 euro / $150 an hour) in order to obtain my license.
I can't even imagine getting driving lessons from people who aren't professionally trained. What about the double pedals and extra mirrors?

Can't wait until we have self driving cars

With the age of our fleet in NZ even if they started to be available before 2020 it would be well beyond 2035 before they represented a significant percentage of the fleet.

We could introduce exponentially increasing registration costs to force fleet replacement sooner? How does Japan do it?

These cars will have lower cost of ownership and it will happen naturally.

There will be many applications where self driving is unsuitable so expect normal cars and business vehicles to be around for a long time yet.

Proper emissions tests would begin that process fairly easily! Many of the vehicles I see look as though they are being run on coal.

Exactly so.

If you can't afford to learn properly, walk.

These parents are the ones driving like lunatics when you see them overtaking on blind bends, crossing solid lines, towing boats at 110kmh in the driving rain, blasting through red lights and so on - why on earth would you want such people training the next generation of drivers?

MikeB4: Driver training should be part of the school curriculum.

Not really - except in general terms. Part of the problem is that children ought not to be driving...!

We teach them Math, English, Latin but those subjects seldom kill, (Bronte sisters books the exception) but a huge percentage of school leavers drive and that does kill.

I also believe the driving test procedure needs changing.

1. Learners licence; should be valid for 6 months if no formal driver training started with in that time the licence is cancelled. If training started extended for a maximum 12 months.
2. Restricted licence; should be valid for 12 months, if full licence not obtained in that time the licence is cancelled and the procedure starts from the beginning.
3. The driving age should equal voting age.

How many NZ schools teach Latin today, out of interest?

From observation, few of them seem to teach English so I cannot imagine that Classics get much classroom time!

Not many I'd say, but there will be a few.

Pretty sure the School I went to (a large Auckland public school) still teaches Latin. In 3rd form way back when I was there, it was compulsory for the top six or so streams (all years were streamed).

I learnt (attempted to learn) Latin and French. I think it is still part of the list of optional subjects.

How does Japan do it? cheaper cars.

Self drive cars will be incredibly expensive for quite a few years, early adoption will be very small.

Maybe an Uber/Lyft type services will take off - at least for around town. I'm guessing for long distance it will be a while.

Agreed.  And without the dual pedals, the 'instructor' is powerless to prevent something like this - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11570002&ref=NZH_Tw
Members of the public lifted a car off a child who was run over in a carpark by a learner driver today.  The young woman was having a driving lesson with her mother at a New World carpark in Whangamata when she accidentally accelerated instead of braking.

Indeed, well all you can do is pull the handbrake but it's not very effective in an automatic
