Scott3:

Quality of FM transmitters is poor, and the frequencies they operate on are effectively public & very limited, meaning you will run into issues where other nearby people's FM transmitters land on the same frequency as yours. (That is on the assumption that people still use FM transmitters, havn't used one myself for many years.)

FM transmitters' default frequency must be the same as National Radio (101.4), since if I'm listening to this channel I start to pick up various transmissions which overwhelm the official station. Quite frustrating if you're stuck in traffic and wanted to listen to the news... They're definitely far more prevalent in South Auckland than the rest of the city.

Only on the free plan. If you're a paid subscriber, you can download the music to your phone and just connect it from there even without using any data.

Until it decides that it wants data to redownload things and will not play anything when offline when you are a long way away from signal.

Do not trust any of the streaming platforms offline playback to work when you need it. They have hostile DRM in their product to make sure it stops working when they want it to stop.

Plus I have no idea what spotify are encoding their stuff with but some tracks on it sound totally aweful like its a transcode from a lousy MP3.

True but we're talking about the lesser of two evils
Pay for a music streaming subscription (so can listen offline), spend an evening downloading all the CDs they own.
Done. I don't really worry myself about audio quality in the car anyeay.
NB I use YouTube music as I'm just barely still on a grandfathered pricing plan.

I get in my parent's car and they must have 200 CDs filling every avaliable nook and cranny.

I veiw music like books or DVDs. I no longer have an interest in accumulating things that take up so much physical space. That said, I still buy physical books for reference type subjects.
