my 23yo BMW had no rust. And it spent the last 3 years no more than 200metres from a beach.
Euros build better cars than the japanese!
Galvanised shell... :)

If you see the finished job before the screen goes in, MF, make sure it's perfectly smooth!

White coloured cars are more prone to rust than any other colour.

Something to do with condensation and the absorbtion of moisture.

It is a (not so well) known fact that some NZ assembled Nissans (can't remember the year) did not go through the correct paint dipping process.

There are actually quite a few reasons for rust forming around front windows and their respective seals.
There is the quality of the adhesive sealer, think black glue used by the car manufacturer. Usually quite different to the 2 main products used commercially when a windscreen is replaced. If water penetrates the seal and contacts the metal of the car, then obviously rust will occur. The manufacturers do not all use the same product and quality will vary.

Stress within the car body which occurs in cornering ,braking and bumps can cause micro fractures in some of the sealers, especially as the sealer ages, ( extreme sunlight does not help) this can cause water ingestion ( over a long period of time) these forces on the car body ( quite significant) allow degradation of welds and allow gaps to open . Chrysler galvanise joints I'm sure, but it's common where two metals meet, as in around the windscreen housing for rust to occur.

So to answer your question if you live by the sea, drive over bumpy roads, carry big weights,park your car in the sun. I would think you should be Ok for at least 3-5 years. On average I'd say you should not get rust in a car for 8-12 years.

There must be some reasons to move to Hamilton, although can't imagine any good ones except perhaps that its close to both Auckland and Tauranga (which is one more reason than for moving to Palmerston North).

My 95 Toyota still has the original rust patch under the wheel arch that it had when I bought it a few years ago. If I had remembered to change the oil regularly it would still be a great car!

Time to find a new industry!

would anyone still be driving a NZ assembled Nissan?
If they were I would expect it to probably have rust anyway. :-)

I just got my 20 year old Primera back from Smith and Smith yesterday, it had a crack in the windscreen, and when they replaced it there was rust in the frame.
However the panel beater only charged $150+GST to fix it so it can't have been too bad.
Not bad for a car that has spent 20 years exposed to the elements (not even in a car port).
