I had made errors in my previous post. The front and side cameras have different wiring to the rear camera, go figure.

Left hand cam was

+6V = white red stripe
Ground = Black
Video+ = White with black stripe
Video- = White

Front Cam

+6V = blue red stripe
Ground = Black
Video+ = Blue with white stripe
Video- = Blue

Hi Team,

A friend of mine is about to purchase a Mazda 3/Axela with a Japanese head unit in it. It has a factory rear camera (single only, no side camera) and I was wondering if the unit mentioned earlier in the thread would be compatible with it? (the c900-v7-538)

I assume this would be all I need to make the camera work?

The part I can't work out, is how is this unit powered?I can only see the front/side camera input, and an RCA out?

I think the c900-v7-538 is only required for Mazdas that have dual cameras.

I got all my information from a Japanese website https://minkara.carview.co.jp/ (Google Translate is your friend)

Once you get your hands on the Japanese head unit, you can see what connection the camera will determine what you need.

Is that not a single input plug for the camera? 8 possible pins, presumably 4 each, 8 would only be populated if both cameras installed?

I rang Mazda today, and as suspected, they were less than knowledgeable on the subject... he seemed surprised I had a part number and that he could get it... (8 weeks ex Japan)

Checking on Google, the the Mazda Alexa OEM camera has a 5-pin connector, whereas the MPV has an 8-pin. So, I'm guessing the Power Module would be incompatible.

I too had fun to the Mazda part store manager where they are asking for the VIN number of my car and then saying it's not on list of parts for my car.

I had to explain that this is an aftermarket module that Mazda sells.

I have forgotten this video which is quite detailed (175) How To Wire A Japanese or OEM Parking Camera to an Aftermarket Screen. - YouTube

I think I have found the required product.

To me the cable can be used in one of two ways:

  • One is adding a new camera to the existing OEM head unit.
  • Or, replacing the head-unit and retaining the existing OEM reversing camera.

AXBUCH-MZ | Axxess Integrate (axxessinterfaces.com)

You will then just need to get a 6V voltage regulator to power the OEM reversing Camera.

yeah I had come across similar types of harness, but that also doesnt fit the Mazda Axela 2012 unfortunately. It seems there is sweet FA that is around for the Sedan Axela/3 - a few things are around for the hatchback (apparently different camera), and lots for CX/6/MPV etc.

At the end of the day, the existing camera will need powering and will give off a signal. That’s not many required connections to actually function. Personally I’d just cut the cables and make it work rather than struggle to find an adapter with a 2 month lead time etc.

In the MPV case the main issue I had was to feed one of the cameras with a 6V supply, instead of the more normal 12V. I wanted to use the factory camera as it’s all smoothly integrated with the rear of the car. It has Japanese writing on the screen and the angle and resolution is a bit crap to be honest though.

You could always keep the piece you cut off, so that it could be returned to factory at a later date by reconnecting it. To be fair though that is extremely unlikely to ever occur as the next owner will want the same issue resolved as well and it would not be a selling hurdle in practise.

I just bought a 4 way camera control box and manually switched between camera. It has a control line to auto switch to reverse camera.

You will still need to address any inbuilt existing car camera that runs on 6V and not the normal 12V.

That box doesn't appear to show a unified 360 view, just ability to cycle through the individual cameras.

For reference the images may not look that useful as they're won't be de-fisheyed like the 360 camera approach normally does.

Yeah, depends what you want of course. The 4-way box worked fine for me. I just had a 12V-6V step-down transformer on power in side of the box so all factory cams get fed 6V.

I didn't have much choice but to replace head unit as the touch had died on it so was inoperable. I didn't even realise it had 360 view!

All good, just discussing some of the implications.

You can off course get a 360 box and feed the cameras into it to recreate the 360 field of view display.  Similar to what you've done, just a different use of the video signals.

Update: Ended up just taking it to a specialist. They charged about 300 to install the radio and wire in a new HD reversing camera, as well as integrating with steering wheel controls, and reversing signal. The car that ended up being bought didn't have a reversing camera. So just made sense.
