Hi there!

I have a personalized plate on my current car. I have a new car arriving shortly. It will end up with the personalized plate on it. The new car will need to be registered in NZ, can I move the plate to the new car and what does happen with a plate for the old car?

Also also anyone fitted those Euro Personalized plates to euro cars? I have heard it's tricky (The new plates don't have any holes in them yet!).

Go to VTNZ (or similar) and get new a new standard plate for the current car. Fit it now.

When the new car arrives go back to VTNZ. You fill in a form, separate with some cash, give them back the new "standard" plates and then fit your personalised plate.

I am not sure this is correct. If the OP takes the action above they will have to surrender their personalised plates immediately (as they are no longer fitted to the old car) and will then have to pay a "remanufacture fee" to have the personalised plates remade when he/she is ready to fit them to their new car.

When I moved my plates from my old car to my new car, I took the new car (already fitted with standard plates) to VTNZ. I took my personalised plates off my old car with me.

I filled in the forms, paid the transfer fees (around $20 I think?), then I surrendered the standard plates off the new car, put my personalised plates on it, and was given a new set to put on my old car when I got home.

It's possibly a bit trickier if you are disposing of the old car before the new one arrives tho....

I did step 1 a few weeks ago.

VTNZ have to sight the personalised plates, they do not keep them as they belong to you. My personalised plates are now sitting in the spare room with all my other junk.

The fee is just under $20 as you said pdath.

@Wheelbarrow01 - remember that VTNZ MUST see the existing plates before they will issue the new ones. When you register the new car just take the plates along with you as I expect they will want to "sight" them again.

If you're moving from a "standard" shaped personalised plate to a "euro" shaped one I understand you'll need to pay personalised plates a large fee for the privilige. If you're just getting them re-made in the existing size/shape I believe the cost is about $20.

Even simpler. Just go and register your personalised plate for your new car. Take your VIN number along.

So go to VTNZ or any other provider that supplies license plates, take the plates from your old car and they will sell you a new set of plates for the car. You keep your personalised plates.
