Thought that this (from The Times) might interest the Geeks! (Note - to turn the GBP figures into NZ$, roughly double them)

"Insurers are to analyse motorists’ Facebook pages to set premiums under plans to screen out the riskiest drivers.

The car insurance company Admiral will request permission to access social media sites from today to create a “personality-based” profile of first-time motorists.

The service will use an algorithm to search for evidence that drivers are “conscientious” and therefore less likely to be involved in an accident. This includes analysis of writing styles and whether users make extensive use of calendars or accounting apps.

The company insisted that the “big data” system — dubbed Firstcarquote — would be used only to provide motorists with discounts of up to 15 per cent. Information would not lead to a rise in premiums, it said.

It said the “reputational record” of first-time motorists was being created in the absence of a driving history or no-claims bonus, which could be applied to older motorists to bring down quotes.

Figures from the price comparison website Confused.com show that 18-year-old drivers are charged an average of £2,106 for comprehensive cover, three times the amount for most other drivers."

What if, shock, horror, you don't use social media? I've never had a facebook account and don't ever intend to start one.

Are you 17 though?

This appears to be aimed at new drivers and there probably are not many who do not have Facebook at that sort age now.

And how will they enforce a kid who professes not to have one to cough up his ID?

Many are non unique names and several teens I know (here) have already either bastardised their names to obscure/personalise them or simply picked a nom de pleum (sp?) for their ID?

Think "geektastic " or "phantomNVD" "darthkermit"

How could they ever link those to our offline ID's?

Now that's the "N" sorted.

The other letters - well here's to say that we'll offer full health cover as per our normal policy T&C, but with exclusions you'll need to discuss with your urologist.

How do they force them?

"You would like insurance?"

"Yes."

"Excellent. Facebook name and profile address please."

"No!"

"Ah, well, sorry; we won't be able to assist. Good afternoon and thank you for calling."

Do not forget that car insurance is a legal requirement in the UK unlike here. You will get a world of trouble for driving without it - and the police have NPR cameras all over the road network that instantly tell them if you have insurance, tax, MOT etc as you drive past!

Lol!

It's pronounced envied (as in everyone wants to be like me) and yeah sure they could find my deets on a site like this which I'm reasonably open in, but see if you can track down MammaBear (my mother in law) or FastBoy (my son) and seee how far you'd get?

🤔

So how will they be able to require it to be a "fully-fleshed" ID then as FB happily issue anyone with a new ID for every email/gmail (I actually had several back in the VERY early days when 'testing' the site concept)

I could easily spoof any name I chose, or even start 'grooming' a perfect account now for my 17 birthday in a year or so?
(Lol!)

First post says it will only be used to provide a discount. No verifiable Facebook page, no discount.

Looks like Facebook takes a dim view of anyone else mining its data

Facebook has blocked plans by an insurer to view young drivers' profiles to help set car insurance premiums.

Facebook have nixxed this already citing privacy concerns.

Don't forget this was to be a purely voluntary thing - you could have authorised them to look at (not edit, or log on to) your Facebook page - presumably by "friending" their corporate account and they would then run some kind of analysis on the content and quality of your postings to try and establish whether you were an idiot or not. If you didn't authorise then you wouldn't have qualified for the discount - you cuold still have got insured with them!

Supplying what would effectively be false information would invalidate your insurance in the event of a claim. Since you can (and will) be sued for personal injury in an accident in a claim that could run to millions this might be considered unwise...!

Dim view until they can work out how to monetise it.

There -fixed that for you!
